4/30/05-Kentucky Derby meeting officially underway.

*CHURCHILL DOWNS* Louisville -

The Lousiville Downs will open its gates tommorrow for what promises to be a historic and exciting Spring meet of racing. All the eyes in the Horse Racing World, will be focused on the first Saturday in May. This is the race dreams are made of. This is the race legends are born from. This is the epitome of Americana. The Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, is perhaps the most well known and watched race in the entire World.

For those of you who are new to our web site, or new to horse racing in general, you might want to know the particulars of the Kentucky Derby :

*Grade 1 Race - $2,000,000 purse - Distance 1 1/4 Mile (The classic American distance)*

*Open to Colts, Fillies, Geldings who are 3 year olds*

*This race is the start of the well known "Triple Crown series" which also included, The Preakness at Pimlico, and The Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park.

This one race captures the hearts and minds of average Americans and people Worldwide. Its a race where 'blue-bloods' clash with 'home-breds', where millionaires match their horses against average businessmen/horsemen. One thing is for certain, this race earns respect by the winners.

In the history of the Triple Crown series, only 11 horses have won the Kentucky Derby and then gone on to sweep the Preakness and Belmont Stakes. The last winner of the Triple Crown, was Affirmed, in his famous duel with rival, Ayldar.

Affirmed won the 1978 Belmont Stakes, and I was a 12 year old boy standing on the tables in the Clubhouse Terrace restaurant jumping up and down to just be able to see the stretch run. That was the last Triple Crown winner we have seen.

While there have been many close calls in the last ten years, we all see why the Belmont Stakes is called, "The Test of Champions".

However, despite the fame of the Triple Crown, just winning the Kentucky Derby is a very desirable accomplishment. It ensures that a horse will never be forgotten, and that his breeding rites are secured at a high level of compensation. It also brings that horse and his owner/trainer/jockey into the forefront, and ita joyful ride that all who speak about never forget. This race is America, watch it, enjoy it, it is a piece of history.

*BELMONT PARK* Elmont -

In order to accomodate the Breeders Cup meeting, Belmont Park will be opening two weeks earlier then normal. We cannot even remember a meeting when Belmont was open during the running of the Kentucky Derby. We always watched it at Aqueduct and they would run the Carter Handicap. This also accomodates the longer seasons they have been running at Saratoga.

Belmont Park will be opening May 4th, to celebrate its 100th racing season ! Congratulations Belmont Park ! You were always our home away from home whenever we felt down or needed an escape, or just wanted to enjoy a wonderful day out in the sunshine and the massive stadium that is Belmont Park. If Yankee Stadium is historic for Baseball, and Ruth built it...then MC, 'The Stick', submits that Belmont Park is on that same level of being historic, and Secretariat built it !

Well, actually, August Belmont built Belmont Park at the turn of the century as part of his vision and dream to build a European style race course in America.

When you are at Belmont Park, you are immediately swept away into the past. If you listen closely, you can hear the names of champion horses whisper through the wind. Every Triple Crown winner was coronated here. Every major Champion has raced at Belmont at least once in their career.

However, lets take you back to a normal Summer raceday. July or August, and say a Wednesday or Thursday.....

My mother, Frances, loved Belmont Park, and when I was a child she always took me to the races. She would usually sit in the stands or the restaurant in the clubhouse, and I would run all over the track, while she and my father selected their races, and said hello to the trainers and owners they knew through my fathers medical practice.

The Sun was shining, and the breeze was blowing through the massive 1/4 mile+ structure. I had taken the 2nd floor escalator up to the 3rd level and ran out towards the seats to see a race that was coming up. Well...I was absolutely blown away. If you walk out on the 3rd floor in the stands, you are in the most incredible open air gazebo ever made. The roof at Belmont Park is the largest free standing roof in the world. It spans the entire length of the building which as we said is 1/4 mile+. Then I caught a glimpse of the track from that level...oh my g-d ! It was so vast, so huge, so incredible ! The track at Belmont is the largest in North America. It is a full 1 1/2 mile around, and is a wonderful sight to behold.

I came back in and took the escalators down to the first level and walked out to the clubhouse section of the walking ring. The horses and owners are right there...right in front of you and under the glory of large , elegant 200-300 year old tree's. Combine that with a nice Summer day in NY and you have as close to paradise as any horse fan is ever going to have.

Belmont Park features the finest East Coast jockey's, and trainer's and racing stables. You will see many graded stakes races, and many top level allowance horses shipping in from all over the country. While there will be people who will always tell you Saratoga is the finest or elite of NY Racing, we will never need to go beyond Belmont Park to find racing nirvana.

There will be many more News Updates, Stick Racing Fans. We will be offering a Special Kentucky Derby offering, packed with good information and insights into who will win each race.

In past years, we have selected winners Monarchos(8-1), Charismatic(42-1), War Emblem(7-1), and Funny Cide(8-1).

This years Derby will be a really good one Stick Fans...Stay Tuned.

Best Regards and Racing, MC_Excelsior
