7/29/05 - DEL MAR, 1st WEEK UPDATE
What a difference a few miles make! While Hollywood
Park struggles to survive in Inglewood, down here Del
Mar, less than 100 miles to the south, thrives & just
keeps on keeping on! Opening day figures at Del Mar
(July 20th) were beyond expectations! Over 40 thousand
fans passed thru the turnstiles to record the 3rd
largest attendance numbers in track history! (Daily
handle exceeded $15 mil).
A very auspicious beginning
to what is now confidently predicted to be another
record setting 43 day meet! The new turf course
(installed specifically to entice the Breeders Cup
officials to consider Del Mar for a future Breeders
Cup Day date) has been given rave revues by both
trainers & jockeys alike, and its' soft yet springy
composition has the horses running at top speeds.
There appeared to be no bias whatsoever towards inside
or outer paths, or favoring speed or closers. A very
fair inner turf course! OK. Here are some horses to
watch for here at Del Mar come August.
On Sat. 7/23
Valley Passion, heavily bet, was off slowly & never
got into the race, but had shown some good works, and
can win with a good clean start. On 7/27 in a 5 1/2 F.
Maiden for 2 yr olds, Pithy Gal did not run a lick the
first 3 furlongs as she was caught up in a bit of a
traffic jam, but still came up to finish 3rd as the
5-2 fav. Before that she had finished a strong 2nd,
just beat at the wire. One more chance for her. On
7/28 Best Friend Gracie finished 2nd (photo for the
win) in a Maiden Spec Wt. Shes definitely ready to win
next time out. Also on 7/28 Ironwood ran 4th in the
8th race but he was a strong 2nd before that last out,
and deserves another chance in his next low level
maiden try.
Meanwhile in N. California look for
Russell Baze riding for Jerry Hollendorfer, a very
dynamic duo, winning at a top clip. Thats it for now.
Good luck at the races! - Champagne Joe
