*The Media Darlings*
---------------------------

Every year the mainstream media chooses "The Horse". This is based on immediate observations of the most recent races, and flash judgements. In the last 15 years, the mainstream media has focused on one or two horses as being "The Horse" and they have all lost. One simply need look at the horse with the morning line odds of being favorite to know who the mainstream media will point out as being the next great star or champion.

We don't want to sounds over the top negative to the mainstream, they provide a meaningful and important service to help promote the sport to new fans and people around the world. However, with that said, they are not true Horse Racing enthusiasts. They tend to follow the races at this time of year and they tend to lack depth due to their superficial glaces of the most recent stakes races leading into the Kentucky Derby. This accounts for their regular and often wrong reasoning for pointing out who everyone should be watching and focusing on.

However, without the mainstream media, Horse Racing would be relegated to obscurity and an 'in-crowd' of fans and horsemen who cannot support the finacial aspects of the industry on their own.

Welcome Mainstream Media ! Without you, we(Horse Racing) cannot exist. Please help increase our fan base and bring attention to our sport. If your not sure about certain aspects of the races leading into this one...then ASK US ! We are here for you, as we are certain our friends at DRF, TVG, Equibase, NTRA, and local horsemen are here for you to help you see beyond the gloss and hype of the greatest American Horse Race. Email any of us and ask questions, we all want the same thing....the successful promotion of Horse Racing as a mainstream sport for everyone.

*The Dark Horses*
---------------------------

Churchill Downs Derby Trial.

Don't get Mad turned in a very powerful performance in the 1 Mile Derby Trial. Coming from dead last, Gary Stevens rallied Don't get Mad to a fantastic flying finish. don't get Mad won the Derby Trial drawing off for an impressive Mile in 1:36 flat.

While this race was once used in the past as a stepping stone to the Kentucky Derby, it has been relegated to an obscure stake for 3 year olds. Many factors against this race producing a Kentucky Derby winner include, 1 week rest before the Derby, a flat mile distance, and a usual lack of seasoning among the winners. We really like Don't get Mad down the road, but it has been 13 years since a Derby Trial winner even ran in the Kentucky Derby, much less won it. Too much Taboo to over come here, but that said, this horse looked awesome in the Derby Trial.

Longshot Gallardo(Blanc) was 2nd, and Vicarage(Albarado) finished 3rd.

Lexington Stakes at Keeneland.

Coin Silver(Castellano) really shined and surprised at odds of 13-1. This is a late developing Todd Pletcher trainee. While his race was impressive, the last Lexington winner, Charismatic(whom we picked to win for our fans at long odds in the Derby) is among a handful of Derby winners to come out of this race.

The interesting aspect of this race was the very poor showing by hopeful, Rockport Harbor who finished last. Sort it out(Blanc) was a distant second, and Storm Surge(Albarado) was 3rd.

This was an impressive race for Coin Silver, and certainly showed a capable Derby horse running big. Many questions abound for this one. Was this a 'freak' race ? Is this really Todd Pletcher's top horse, or just another one of his stable who ran big that his owners want to include him in the Derby ? What did he do before this race to make him stand out ? After all he went off at odds of 13-1 in this race.

With all those questions, don't get turned off for this one. Every year a dark horse comes into the Kentucky Derby and every year one of them runs big. This may be Coin Silver's year, we will have to see how the Derby sorts itself out going into the first turn.

*Derby X-Factor*

Please keep in mind what we tell our fans every year....X-Factor !

There are many things that can and do happen on Derby Day to effect the outcome of the big race. People always think that the horses are machines and they will replicate their previous races without any regards to the circus like atmosphere that surrounds every Derby.

Crown Noise.....
Have you ever attended a Triple Crown race ? We can tell you from experience that the dull roar and the undulating sound of 100,000+ screaming fans will leave your ears ringing for days. Imagine the effect that has on the race horses as they come out and are presented in front of those excited and boisterous fans ?

Bad enough they get hit with that noise when they come out on to the race track. It gets worse as they flash through the stretch. A wall of sound awaits the horses as they turn into the stretch. Both the infield and the expanded stands of Churchill will be packed with people. All of them excited and unable to contain their emotions as the horses come into the home stretch. This 'sound wall' can prove as much of a factor as anything. Yet, no one ever mentions this...except The Stick Horse Racing ! We would tell you to examine horses who have run well at large tracks on big racing days, and give them a alight advantage over horses from smaller tracks and crowds.

Traffic and Blind Switch events.....
The Derby is almost always run with a full field of 16-20 horses. Many of the horses will have similar running styles, so some may go to the lead, others may seek to drop in the middle and others will drop back and try to find a spot to close from. Its no secret the back stretch and home stretch at Churchill are surprisingly long. One would think this would favor closers over front runners. Tell that to Swale, or War Emblem, or Charismatic, or any number of front runner's who have gone the distance on or near the front end.
Don't think we are endorsing front runners here...many powerful closers have come on to win the Derby also...Spectacular Bid, 36 Red, Silver Charm, Lil E Tee, and many more. The fact of the matter is, that traffic and navigation make for one of the most important factors in determining the Derby winner.

There have been many runnings where a hole opened up in mid pack, or a horse darting in and then outside rivals made all the difference in his avoiding traffic jams and getting a clean trip home. Traffic can be accounted for when you review the size and depth of other races, but it is Not determinative. No one can account for how the field will stack up into the first turn and down the backstretch, and that will shape the entire running of the race.

*Triple Crown Hopeful ?*

Another interesting aspect of being the Derby winner, is that that horse is the only one capable of winning the Triple Crown(Derby-Preakness-Belmont Stakes). Everyone ask the questions...will this be the year we see a Triple Crown Winner ?

Also, the horses who close in for 2nd or 3rd or even 4th or 5th become the 'horses to watch' for the Belmont Stakes 1 1/2 mile distance. While the question is asked of a Triple Crown, everyone looks for the possible upset horse who might offer good odds in the Belmont Stakes. They seem to forget, the Derby winner still has to win the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico, and thats no walk in the park with the level of competition that always shows up for that race.

Everyone...and I mean Everyone in the Racing World wants to see a Triple Crown winner. I was 12 years old and watched Affirmed hold off Alydar. It was perhaps the greatest thrill in racing, if not in the whole of sports. We have had many close calls since 1978, but we are still waiting for another Triple Crown winner.

"Will we see a Triple Crown this year ?"....from the Stick to all of you...."I sure as hell hope we will see a Triple Crown winner this year !"
