NEWS STORY 11 - We learn of the sad loss of Dale Duspiva. For those who knew him, the loss is great.

In the age of internet communications and email, it is very easy to meet people from far away places. I had the very good fortune of meeting Dale Duspiva in email. We became friends, and I will miss him.

To many of the people who visit our web site, and even to hardcore fans, the name Dale Duspiva may not be a familiar one to you. Well, when I first started out on the internet, Dale was one of the first friends I made.

It is with great sadness that I have only recently learned of his passing, and I wanted to let all our fans know about him.

Dale Duspiva was someone I emailed in 1998 while seeking Horse Racing news from California. At that time, I wrote a column for news for NY, FL, and California. Most of the emails I got back were polite, but not very helpful to me, and some of the emails were downright rude. However, I got an email from Dale and he asked me about myself and my web site.

Dale always had something pleasant to say to me or in email. He invited me to appear on the radio program that Bay Meadows was producing at that time. We had some good laughs on the air, and Dale even made copies of my selections sheets and handed them out to people at Bay Meadows. It was just a really nice thing for him to do. I could reprint the emails from other people at other racetracks, and they would make your hair stand up at how rude and nasty they were. Dale was another story though, he was a warm, friendly man, and I had the highest admiration for his character.

Through Dale, I met Terry Wallace, whom he had worked with in Florida at what it is now called Tampa Bay Downs. G-d bless you Dale, rest in peace. You will be very sadly missed, and you left us far too soon. Dale was 53 years old.

The Obituary below appeared in the SF Chornicle June 19, 2004.

DUSPIVA, Dale F. - Passed away peacefully on June 16, 2004.
Born July 23, 1950, in Cleveland Ohio, graduated from Ohio State University and remained a loyal alumnus, tearing up every time the "i" was dotted during the halftime formation of Script Ohio.

As a young boy, Dale spent many weekend mornings at his father's side watching the horses work out at Thistledown Racetrack. His passion for the sport grew into a career working 26 years for the Daily Racing Form, 32 years in thoroughbred horseracing over all.

He considered his friends his extended family and he enjoyed each and every day he spent in their company. Dale will be remembered lovingly by his wife, Beverly; their children, Erin and David; his parents, Frank and Virginia Duspiva; his sister, Nancy Szucs and many wonderful relatives and caring friends.

There was a memorial on June 21st for his family and friends to a celebration of Dale's life on Monday, June 21st,2004 11:00 a.m. in the Longchamps Room at Bay Meadows Racecourse in San Mateo.

In lieu of flowers, if desired, contributions may be made to an educational fund being set up for Dale's son, David in care of Beverly Duspiva, 3511 Longview Drive, San Bruno, CA 94066.
