5/06/05 - Jackie Bell gets the scoop from "MC" on The Kentucky Derby.

It was our pleasure to be interviewed on a subject we are so well versed on, The Kentucky Derby. Ms. Bell also made the interview enjoyable with her pleasant attitude and obvious interest in the big race.

We mentioned the favorite, Bellamy Road, and told her listeners that we felt he would be a great horse down the road. We wanted all our regular fans and friends to know this as well. We do NOT think Bellamy Road is the horse for the Kentucky Derby. He will be a great horse down the road, in other stakes races. The Preakness would seem to be ideal for his running style. However, Bellamy Road is not our top pick in the Kentucky Derby. We will not be selecting the morning line favorite for the victory !

Nick Zito and his 5 horse entry was also discussed, and I felt that Zito had a stacked deck in his favor with so many horses entered into the big race. Which Zito horses did I point out to her as being more interesting then Bellamy Road ? Only fans of her program and of our web site will know for sure. This is not to say we are picking a Zito trained horse to be the winner either !

Ms. Bell asked about the jockey's, and I mentioned everyone from Jerry Bailey to Jeremy Rose and how experience can be a positive factor over the youthful exuberance and strength of a younger jockey.

Finally, Ms. Bell asked us if we recommended that people go to the Kentucky Derby. We gave a rousing "YES" answer to her question and are happy to repeat our answer here to our fans. The Classic American Horse Race is, The Kentucky Derby. From personal experience of being there, I can say it is so American to be there. You will meet friends and talk to people you have never met before from all walks of life. Everyone will have an opinion on the outcome of the race. Everyone will be there to have a good time and enjoy themselves. If you go to the big dance, remember to enjoy yourself. The only other place I have been to personally that gave me that same feeling was at The Belmont Stakes in NY. People have no other thoughts then of Horse Racing and one race. IT allows you to put the pressure of your life, the burdens you may be facing, any other thoughts, on hold for a few hours. While at the same time, you can regain your thoughts about what makes you happy, and be yourself in the company of supportive strangers, who you soon realize are more like you, then not.

Here's what was not included in the interview due to time constraints, but we wanted our fans and friends to know the future of Horse Racing hangs teetering over an abyss. In an age where Indian Casino's and Slot Machine's are marching across the country, Horse Racing should remember its roots, and stop trying to compete in an industry where it is unable to match the draw of mindless gambling. Its not about gambling, thats what the Horse Racing industry has yet to learn. Gambling is not why people come to the Kentucky Derby. They come to see who wins, and they want to know the reasons why that horse won and what led to those circumstances. Case in point, people enjoyed the movie and book, Seabiscut, by Laura Hillenbrand. They could not gamble on a race already run...yet they were still captivated by the race, and the characters surrounding it. The powers that be in Horse Racing should take note, if you try to hinge the hopes of this industry on a new gambling wager or betting angle, there will not be any nationwide, organized Horse Racing within as short a time as 15 to 20 years. Its not about the gambling, it never has been.

Best Regards and Racing, MC_Excelsior
