This was one of those X-Factor Kentucky Derby's Stick Fans. We told you in our SA Derby story to look at Giacomo and favor him over Buzzards Bay, but he really surprised everyone with a impressive score in a very exciting renewal of The Kentucky Derby....

If you look back at our Santa Anita Derby recap...
Where we said ..."In looking for KY Derby horses, you might want to study Willko, and Giacomo."
Giacomo certainly ran a huge race. Mike Smith was weaving in and out of traffic through the stretch run of this race, and really got that golden trip that always wins KY Derby's. Congratulations to Mike Smith ! He's a great rider, and this was a smashing victory at very long odds. Mike regularly mistook us for someone else around the walking ring at Belmont Park. He often said Hello and How are you to both myself and Karen 'The Blaze' when we would watch the horses being saddled. We always said hello back, and always wondered who he thought we were. Mike Smith, a true gentleman, and friendly guy, great win Mike ! Congratulations and a Big Wave of The Stick for your win in the Derby.
We would be remiss if we did not congratulate the owner and trainer of Giacomo also. We loved this horse in the SA Derby, but when he ran 4th, we though....well, maybe he does not want a distance. If that was ever a question, its been soundly answered now. When they showed the replay of this race on NBC and on TVG, you could see Mike looking for pockets of space and open area's to shoot the gap with Giacomo. This was really a clinic for high speed driving in traffic. Hey Mike...Do you speed on the highway during rush hour ? What a great ride Mike gave this horse. The traffic problems that took out many of the other horses coming into the stretch did not effect Giacomo as he zigged, and then zagged his way through the stretch.
Nick Zito had a 5 horse string coming into this race, and everyone in the main stream media put the weight on his shoulders before the race. None of the 5 horses Zito trained finished in the top 6 horses in this race. However, give Nick Zito a break. There is no way to plan ahead for the traffic problems and shock the horses feel when all those screaming fans go wild as the horses spill into the stretch. All of Zito's horses have won big before, and will probably win big again. You have to realize the Derby is one of those races which would never run the same way if you ran it again with the same horses and conditions. The same valid excuses can be placed for Todd Pletcher's horses. This race looked like a cavalry charge coming around the far turn. Depending on where your horses were placed, made all the difference in the world as to where you were going to finish.
Afleet Alex ran an outstanding race. He simply got beat by a better horse and a better trip on this day. I think this one looks to turn the tables on his rivals when they meet again. The story behind Afleet Alex was very touching and involved a little girl, Alex, who later died of cancer at 8 years old. In her short life, she raised awareness of childhood cancer, and helped raise over $1,000,000. A portion of Afleet Alex's winning's goes to her fund, to help others. It was a touching story, and for certain, it made people root for Afleet Alex to win.
Derby Trial winner, Dont get Mad was an impressive 4th. Tyler Baze must have thought he was riding a liquid fuel rocket into the stretch. A smaller field, and more distance, and this one might win it all. I know I complained about everyone pointing out a Belmont Horse after the Derby....but .... hey....Don't get Mad is a great horse to look for in the Belont Stakes ! Don't get Mad....Get Ahead in the Belmont !
Last place finisher, High Limit, took a very bad step going down the backstretch, and it looked like he was eased up. For all of you who might have liked that horse and wrote in, he is a solid horse, he simply took a very bad step and thankfully he finished and did not fall. Ramon Dominguez and Bobby Frankel looked calm and confident before the race, and I think they were very disappointed by the finish, but probably happy they will be able to try again down the road.
The Exotics, were all Record Payoff's for the Kentucky Derby. The Exacta paid well over $9,800...wow. The Triple paid in excess of $133,000...Wow, Wow. The Superfecta paid an incredible, phenomenal $1,780,000 + WOW WOW WOW !!! Thats right, the Super paid over One Million Seven Hundread Thousand Dollars ! It had to be one winning ticket, and I think that record will stand for eternity. Congratulations to whomever had that. What an incredible payoff.
*UPDATE ON SUPERFECTA PAYOFF - According to report's in the media that we just learned about, there was 1 Winning ticket sold on the Superfecta for $1. Thus the payout was 1/2 of the reported mutual, or $890,000+. This story, however, is not over yet ! Apparently the winning ticket was sold as a quick pick to a man at Turf Paradise who had purchased 50, $1 tickets. According to the report, this man threw his tickets away ! NEVER THROW YOUR TICKETS AWAY WITHOUT CHECKING THE RESULT AS OFFICIAL !!!
*2nd UPDATE ON SUPERFECTA PAYOFF - A SECOND and different story is also circulating, about the winner of the Superfecta payout and it is completely different !! According to this version of the story, 3 men at Freehold Raceway bought a $360 combination box ticket on multiple horses and they won the Superfecta for a $1 payout ! We will have to double check all our sources to tell you which story is correct. Rumors run wild with the Superfecta !
The ticket seller, a very honest woman, some how knew her machine had sold the winner, and told the man. All of the garbage from the entire day was collected an sorted to find the winning ticket. They could not find it in the garbage ! Thats where you say out loud, ...."Oy Veah !" Well, after returning to her window, the ticket seller apparently found the winning ticket in a pile of throw away tickets at her window. She gave the ticket to the gentleman, and that has to be one of the most honest women in the entire world. I thought, Karen, 'The Blaze' was the most honest women ever born. This lady ticket seller should be commended and applauded by the fans, what a show of honesty on her part. Would you have given the ticket back ? Should we even ask ? We do not know her name yet, but if we discover it, we will post it. A Wave of The Stick to the Honest Lady Ticket Seller, way to go.
We are now off to Pimlico and The Preakness Stakes in 2 weeks. Will Giacomo keep his bid alive for a Triple Crown ? We hope he will. Signing out from Kentucky and Churchill Downs, this was an incredible finish in the World's most popular horse race...The Kentucky Derby.
*Of Note, to Ken Rudolph...Nice Handicapping Sir. You rooted that one home, and we have been there too. What a great feeling to win with such a big longshot, and you gave it out to everyone who was listening. A Wave of The Stick to you in triumph also. Well done Sir, well done.
Best Regards and Racing, MC_Excelsior
