We were very high on Smuggler going into the weekend racing. We told all of our customers that this was the Horse for the day, and Edgar Prado did not disappoint us. Smuggler was outpaced early .....

6/27/05 - The Stick Studio, New York

Smuggler had to face a top field of 3 yr old fillies on Saturday, but from every bit of information we could gather for the fans, we felt very confident Smuggler would win.

The Favorite in the race, Summerly, under Jerry Bailey, broke smoothly into stride and assumed the lead, very far out from the rail. Racing wide down the backstretch, Summerly looked very strong. However, after running 1:10 3/5 for 6 Furlongs, Summerly began to tire and was soon pounced on by both Spun Sugar and our Best Bet of the day, Smuggler.

Spun Sugar gave her all, and looked very tough at the 1/8th pole coming toward the wire. It looked as if she had successfully put away Smuggler, but the race was not over , till it was over !

Smuggler, under a very powerful, very confidant, and very well timed, Edgar Prado, surged forward and nailed the victory through the stretch. While this one was a clear winner, Spun Sugar certainly deserves mention as a top filly to be considered for the future.

While Summerly tired to third place, it should be noted that she held very gamely for 3rd place, and after running fast fractions and being passed, most other fillies would have thrown in the towel.

Final Time of 1:48 2/5 was a very solid and powerful time compared to our track bias and speed figures for the day and for the week. Smuggler ran her heart out and was a beauty to behold coming through the stretch.

We may well have seen the start of a new legend in Smuggler. This little girl can run ! She has game, and she has given herself a name.

While everyone keeps pointing out the jockey's who win the Triple Crown Races and focusing on them, we remind the fans, that there are many stars out there in the jockey ranks across America. While Jeremy Rose deserves high praise and credit for his thrilling Preakness and Belmont victories aboard Afleet Alex, no one should forget the jockey ranks around the country. Edgar Prado certainly has shown himself to be one of the best riders in the World, and his victory aboard Smuggler was yet another showcase of his talent.

We really love Smuggler for the future campaign this year, and cannot wait to see her race at Saratoga. Lets keep getting 2-1 Shug ! I hope they run the best girls in the country at Smuggler, because not only will we get better odds on her, but she will keep defeating them ! Go Smuggler Go !
