7/08/05 - UPDATE PART TWO - BAY MEADOWS SAVES HOLLYWOOD PARK
BAY MEADOWS SAVES HOLLYWOOD!
On Thursday July 7 TVG had as a special guest, Terry
Fancher, Pres. of Bay Meadows Land Corp., owners of
Bay Meadows race track & he confirmed what we had
reported several weeks ago. Bay Meadows has officially
bought Hollywood Park. The agreed upon price was 260
mil, a nice profit for Churchill Downs Inc which had
bought the track for just 140 mil in 1999. The new
owners plan to improve both the turf & the dirt tracks
& make some needed improvements to the facility
itself. They guarantee at least 3 years of continued
racing, & if after that time the track shows a nice
profit they have given Churchill Downs an option to
buy back a portion of the track if they so desire.
Meanwhile Fancher said he will send a committee to
lobby the California law makers in Sacramento for a
better deal for the tracks in the state, including a
possibility of allowing slots to be placed at each
track. That would be a boon to track attendance & with
the added revenue those slots could generate,
increased purses which would draw more horsemen and
stables back to the Golden State.
Meanwhile, Corey
Nakatani is burning up the track lately. He's riding
like the Corey of 5 years ago, winning aboard both
favs & longshots, & for big name trainers & no name
trainers with equal regularity. He has a 21% win pct,
bested only by Alex Solis who is running at 22%.
Here's the current standings, G. Gomez leads with 52
wins,V. Espinoza has 45 as does Solis, Tyler Baze has
posted 38 wins, and Nakatani now has 37 but with a
much lower number of mounts. In the trainer dept.,
Doug O Neill has a strangle hold on 1st place with 29
wins, Mike Mitchell has 18,Vlad Cerin has 17 & Neil
Drysdale has 15, but pct. wise its Mitchell with just
under 28% winners, & Drysdale with just over 27%. The
recently introduced 10 cent superfecta has proven
super popular. For a total of $12 a player can box 5
horses. OK. The payoff will be 10% of the superfecta
numbers but with a small investment a player could end
up with a hefty ROI. Try it. Good luck. See you at Del Mar.

BAY BID BUOYS BAEDECKER!
Rick Baedecker, Pres. & chief officer at Hollywood
Park, was all smiles recently upon notice of a last
minute Hollywood park purchase bid proffered by the
Bay Meadows ownership. The bid amount was reported to
be around $275 million, several mil above all others,
and includes a guarantee to continue a thoroughbred
racing program at HollyPk for at least three years.
This could be the best news Rick has received all
year!
Declining attendance 7 handle figures had driven
Churchill Downs Inc., parent holding company of
HollyPk to begin seriously shopping out the inglewood
track. They had already received several offers from
interested parties, most all of whom had no intention
or desire to continue operating Hollywood Park as a
thoroughbred racing venue.
However, the Bay Meadows
Group, probably mindful of what effect a Hollywood
park closing could have on the statewide thoroughbred
racing industry, must believe that with some basic
changes and some additional improvements, and with the
right advertising campaign, this racetrack could be a
viable & profitable undertaking, and they seem willing
to bet three years on it!
Nothing finalized as yet,
but hope springs eternal and if a purchase/sale
agreement can be reached between the two parties
Southern California racing fans will continue to enjoy
racing at Hollywood park for at least three more years
and maybe beyond! Hip! Hip! Hooray! But P.S. In the
meantime just Keep your fingers CROSSED! C U at Del Mar!
