10/11/05 - Champagne Joe fills in all the fans from the Coast on Oak Tree.

OAKTREE UPDATE

Oaktree 2005 got off to a perfect start as opening week figures including the famous Oaktree Stein Giveaway on the 1st saturday of racing there, posted record & near record numbers in both attendance & daily handle. Credit OakTree V.P & director of operations Dr. Rick Arthur who also has many more big attendance enhancing giveaways & promotions planned, including the fabulous & much desired DVD "All About Winning" which chronicles the story of the winningest jockey in horse racing history Laffit Pincay, which will be given out FREE to all patrons attending the Oak Tree races at Santa Anita on Sat Oct. 15! Another great planned giveaway will be the Oak Tree brushed aluminum thermos set to be offered on getaway day Sun. Nov 6th, along with a garanteed 1 million dollar pick 6 pool set for that day as well.

More Kudos go to the entire executive & operational staff of the not for profit OakTree racing organization for being named "Business Of The Year" by the Arcadia Chamber of Commerce. This (deservedly awarded) due to their "high standard of business practice", which is reflected in every aspect of this all too short racing meet. Quality racing, generous purse schedules, courteous emplyees & great fan appreciation make this organization an outstsnding representative of what racing can and should be. OakTree deserves our support!

TRACK NEWS: No apparent bias has been evident thus far. Speed has been holding up in most sprints, as expected, while closers have done well at 1 mile and up, also as expected. track surface shows no variance in lanes, inside & middle lanes equal in depth & firmness.

Trainer John Sadler doing well again, as he has here at Oak Tree the last few years. Martin Pedroza continues to ride well, following his title winning efforts at Fairplex. Congrats to Alex Solis for winning the 6F. Ancient Title Stakes aboard 2-1 fav Capt. Squire (Sat Oct 8). Capt. Squire is now 2 for 2 for 2005. The almost wire to wire win (Squire was headed momentarily in the stretch by Zanzibar) may set the Capt. firmly on a path to Belmont Park & the BC sprint on Oct 29. Trainer Jeff Mullins says "owners will decide". In the Oak Tree Breeders Cup mile which also took place on Sat Oct 8th, Singletary won easily with a strong last to first move. Designed For Luck was 2nd. Singletary had been 3rd in that same race last year, then went on to win the BC mile. Can history repeat? The owners of 3rd place finisher Buckland Manor may hope so, but will they try?

At this time Garret Gomez sits atop the jockey standings with 15 victories from 52 mounts, along with 9 2nds & 9 3rds for an ITM % of 63 & a win % of 28! P. Val has 9 wins, Pedroza & Jon Court have 8 apiece. Trainer Patrick Gallegher is one to keep an eye out for. He's been spotting his entries well, winning 3 of 9 with 2 2nds & 2 3rds for an ITM of 78%! Good Luck & I'll see you at Oak Tree!

8/30/05 - CHAMPAGNE TELLS US WHAT IS GOOD AND NOT GOOD AT DEL MAR

DEL MAR HAPPENINGS..GOOD/NOT GOOD! With just one full week remaining in the '05 Del Mar season all reports point towards another record breaking meet, bot in attendance & daily handle. Last week in the million dollar Pacific Classic at del Mar Lavaman disappointed many fans, however the many fans did not disappoint Del Mar. Over 40 thousand turned out to wager a record breaking daily handle of over 4o million, followed by another big Saturday (Aug. 27) of over 30 tho in attendance & a daily handle of 25 mil! Proof positive that, despite the problem up at Hollywood Park, horseracing is alive and well in Southern California. Now for the good & not good. GOOD to see Garret Gomez put his demons to rest and come back strong. Now mentally & physically sound, he has been on a riding tear, topping riding achievements with that perfectly timed ride aboard Borrego in that pacific Classic. Gomez is currently 2nd in the jockey standings at Del Mar 2005.

NOT GOOD. How the new set of racing stewards at Del Mar seem to be seeing riding infractions where there are none & taking so much time reviewing tapes just in order to announce that "there will be no change" in the running order finish. It shouldnt take 10 minutes to review a race in order to determine whether there was or was not an incident sufficiently significant to warrant a disqualification.

GOOD seeing the 2 yr old filly Wild Fit continue her winning ways..Breeders Cup in her future? NOT GOOD watching Lost In The Fog continue his coast to coast travelling win parade but skipping a trip down here. So Cal fans would love to see this 9 for 9 win machine run at one of our tracks too! NOT GOOD Jockey room fisticuffs between Nakatani & P. Val. Both pinned with $500 fines as penalty. Maybe they should face a full day suspension for such antics. A meaningful penalty like that is more apt to put a damper on that kind of behind the scene jockey bad behaviour.

GOOD Weather at Del Mar has been super! NOT GOOD Meeting ends in a little more than one week! Jockey trainer combos to watch for..Headley/Solis, Hess/Desormeaux, Avila/Berrio, Mullins/Espinoza. Looking forward to big Labor Day weekend of racing. Good Luck All
