As everyone in the racing world has been buzzing about the terrible spill that Gary Boulanger took on Sunday, we felt it was our duty to give our fans, our take on what happened.
It was one of those bad spills guys, one where a person's Life and Career are put in jeopardy. The day seemed normal enough on Sunday, January 30, 2005. A crowd of 5,083 people had come out to enjoy the races following the big Sunshine Millions program. The weather was clear, and the track was fast.
Gary had a 3 race riding schedule, and had a rousing ride in the 7th race. On a 6-1 horse named, appropriately enough, Present Danger, Gary had come home powerfully for a nice 2nd place finish in a tough field. His day seemed routine enough up to that point, and Gary Boulanger must have been looking forward to riding in a $100K stakes race, The Mac Diamida.
Sent off at odds of 39-1, In Hand lingered at the back of the pack, probably waiting for a late stretch run. Suddenly and without warning, In Hand lost his footing. This resulted in a serious spill, and the fall of another horse and rider. The horse, In Hand, was so badly hurt, he had to be put down. The Stick Horse Racing sends its condolences to the connections, its horrible to lose a horse. Macaw and Eddie Castro also went down, but thankfully they are alright. It was quite a different story for Gary Boulanger and In Hand.
According to reports from various news outlets, Gary Boulanger lost his spleen as a result of the accident, and also suffered a dangerous blood clot. The blood clot has been removed successfully at the hospital he was taken to. This resulted in a lessening of the swelling around his brain, which is good news to all. The "Official" condition being reported is that Gary was upgraded from critical to serious.
Gary is 37 years old, and a veteran journeyman rider. His career has been one of determination and courage. Last year at Gulfstream and Calder, GB was pushing the top riders in the country to ride at their best.
Everyone at The Stick Horse Racing sends our well wishes to Gary Boulanger and his family. GET WELL SOON GARY ! We hope your recovery will be at your own pace, and we look forward to your getting better.
Best Racing and Regards, MC
