A CONVERSATION WITH KENT DESORMEAUX
Kent Desormeaux is certainly one of the hardest
working, most dedicated and honest thoroughbred racing
jockeys around, and just a few days ago I was
priviledged to spend some time with this Hall Of Fame
rider who has recently made the decision to
permanently hang his tack in NY and compete on the
NYRA circuit. This following many years of very
successful riding on Southern California tracks.
When I asked him about the move he said he had just
wanted some change of scenery, (and so far that change
has been fruitful for both himself and his fans). "New
track. new jockey agent, new home, (he mentioned he
had already purchased a home in nearby Nassau County
on Long Island) "Everything new, and I've been winning
races here in New York at a good rate, but I do miss
the good weather somewhat from back in California".
He said he intends to stay on the NYRA trail, & plans
to ride up at Saratoga as well.
He explained the
different riding styles as he sees them from So. Cal.
racing & East Coast racing. "In Southern California
most emphasis was on speed. Horses would jump out of
the gate and race more like quarterhorses. Here it's
more a case of getting position, rating your mount,
and timing your finish.". (My own thoughts on this is
simply that here it's more important to have a skilled
knowledeable jockey up, and that may be why Kent seems
to be winning more & holding a clinic on horserace
riding 101).
Asked whether he would consider returning
to So. Cal. for the winter racing season he inferred
that at this time that scenario was very improbable.
Regarding the new cushion track surfaces, he was
emphatic. "Best thing since sliced bread! Easy on the
horses, and safer than ordinary dirt. Similar to maybe
riding on a kind of trampoline. I love it!".
It was a bit of a surprise to learn that he felt the
fastest horse he had ever ridden was 'Afternoon
Delights'. "But", he added, "As far as a best router
or marathon runner , that was 'Kotashan"!" (Horse of
the year 1994). Of course his biggest thrill in racing
understandably came when he won his 1st Kentucky Derby
aboard 'Real Quiet'. "Dreams came true that day!".
I asked what were his plans following horse race
riding, after all there comes a time when even the
best of the best must consider hanging up their tack
for good. His answer "I'll definitely stay connected
with the business of horseracing. I love this sport.
Hopefully I can hook up as a commentator with the
likes of HRTV or TVG or something along those lines.".
Broadcasters ..take note, then get in line!
Well, here's one racing fan who will not enjoy that
day when that day finally comes around, hopefully not
for many years to come 'cause right now it's easy to
"Pay The Rent With Kent!".
Until next time, good luck to all, see you at
Saratoga!
