07/28/04 *P.VAL STILL HAVING PROBLEMS*
*TYLER ROCKS CROSBY*
*BEAUTIFUL DEL MAR*
*WE ARE IN CONTEST*

Well, we have been reading the popular press and see that P.Val is having some adversity again. Apparently he was supposed to show up for a drug test and give a hair sample. When he showed up, he had shaved off all the hair on his body according to reported accounts. What a shame, and we will always love P.Val and consider him one of the greatest riders ever. We hope his current adversity can be overcome and we will see him riding and winning soon.

We watched the beautiful images on ESPN this weekend from Del Mar, and Kela ROCKED the Bing Crosby sprint. I mean break on the outside and run in the 9 path all the way around and still win for fun...It was like everyone else was running 6F and Kela was running 7 Furlongs.

Babyfaced Tyler Baze (Of the Amazing Flying Baze-Linda's) with a mouth full of braces and looking like he should be in high school, is going to be a dominant force in the future. Wow, way to go Tyler, a BIG wave of The Stick for you in respect.

I think it would be awesome to run to the beach for an hour go for a swim and then dry off in the Sun and come back to the track for a few races and lunch. What a beautiful place Del Mar is. Its a shame they only race for 7 weeks out of the 52 weeks in the year. They really need to have 3 month meeting to be able to make an honest run for Breeders Cup considerations and to give the people in the San Diego area time to have fun and enjoy racing.

We had a rocky start to the "Contest" on line for Del Mar, but we are having fun with it and are ranked in the middle of the pack after the first week of racing. We will update our progress and look to hit the top 100 be the end of the meet out of the more then 9,000 people playing.

Oh....Champagne Joe has an article too, I will post it ASAP.

07/28/04 *CHAMPAGNE JOE REPORTS IN FROM THE COAST !*

DEL MAR 2004 Del Mar, the nations most successful track, leading in attendance and daily handle for the past several years, once again opened to a near record crowd (39,346), 3rd largest attendance day in track history! It was the start of its' 65th season. Noteworthy: Tyler Baze, leading rider at the just concluded Hollywood Park meeting, picked up right where he left off by winning the 1st race on a nice 8-1 longshot, but form held up for most of the opening day Wednesday, and continued into the Thursday afternoon & Friday evening cards. Jeff Mullins, who had been winning at a near 30% clip, also continued his hot streak. Jeffs' only weak point may be with his 1st time starters. His strong points are how well he does 1st or 2nd time off a claim, and 2nd or 3rd starts following a layoff., so stick with him thru the Del Mar meet. Other trainers to watch; Bob Baffert, Del Mars' leading trainer for 6 straight meetings (He has another strong contingement of good stock ready to go), and Bobby Frankel, of course. Another trainer who appears to have a well meant stable is the veteran Doug O'Neill. Jockey Victor Espinoza always does well at Del Mar, & young Mick Ruis, who finished the Holly Park meet as one of the top riders, has more confidence than ever. Mick always gives 110%. Expect Tyler Baze, along with Espinoza and Ruis to be in the hunt for top riding positions for Del Mar 2004. GOOD NEWS! Right now it is almost certain that Smarty Jones will compete in the Pacific Classic (Aug 22). Now a sad note. On Monday July 19th, Freehouse, winner of the "98 Pacific Classic & the "98 Santa Anita Derby passed away prematurely due to complications from a head injury. Freehouse also placed in all three of the '97 Triple Crown races. He was only 10 years old. Till next time, good luck at the races!

07/05/04 *THE SURF WILL MEET THE TURF AT OLD DEL MAR !*

Just as they go to Saratoga in the East, California's Top Racing will go to Del Mar. Our good Friend Champagne Joe will be there to give out his days winners, and we know he will appreciate the top level racing live.

Del Mar is located just outside of San Diego on a highway thats is RIGHT ON THE BEACH ! You can see the Ocean from the stands at Del Mar and literally walk across the road to the beach. The breeze and the sunshine make this a wonderful and exciting experience. San Diego is more of a military town and not as built up as Los Angeles. There are Mountains and Ocean within a walk.

Oh, did we forget to mention the racing ? Yes, they race at Del Mar and the level is up to the same high standards as Santa Anita or Hollywood Park. However, the days purses do not total the same high amount that will be at Saratoga each day. But don't let the purse structure bother you, all the Top horses in California run at Del Mar. The meets fixture is the Pacific Classic, a Grade 1 usually at $1 Million purse level. Also of note, the San Diego HDCP draws a top level field.

We will be reporting in and have Champagne's reports when we get them posted.

Enjoy the only true "Beach Racetrack", at Del Mar, The Surf does meet the Turf ! Best Regared to Mary Shepardson and all our friends at Del Mar.

04/30/04 *BUDDY LEE AND SNOWY GIVE THEIR TAKE ON DERBY 04*

Buddy Lee :

Everyone thinks Im so quiet and so well mannered, well here's where I can let my innner Cujo come out and BARK my selections for all the World to hear.

The California horses are all being ignored once again..well they are not a bunch of woof woof's ! Casteldale has won on Turf and Dirt, and in another country(Ireland), no one else in this field can say that. While I do not have an official pick in the Stick Kentucky Derby Special Order, I can tell you that Castledale is my top choice !.

Quinton's Gold Rush is no nummie either ! He won big in the Lexington and earned a spot in this race. However, I have to defer to The Blaze and say I agree with her always and we should all be on the look out for mudders in case its an off track. Good Luck people.

Snowy :

All this growling about the possible rain making for an off track does not deter me. I wish I could go outside all the time ! I think at this level of racing, rain will not affect the race as much as it might if this were a turf race or a normal group of ALLW horses. My pick is Tapit, since I also do not have a say in the Official Stick Special, I am giving out Tapit as he was supposed to be very sick and he came back in 3 weeks and won a top race. Fusaichi Pegasus won, why can't Tapit ?

I hope your all in the cookies after this years Derby Special ! Go with The Stick's Special recommendations, he usually knows the BIG races well.

04/18/04 *SANTA ANITA DERBY A WILD SCAMBLE AND JUMBLE FOR CA HOPES*

The Santa Anita Derby usually showcases the finest one or two horses racing in California and then points them at the KY Derby showdown with East Coast rivals. However, this year we had a wild finish and a mad scamble at the line which gave us more questions then answers.

Bob Baffert trained favorite, Wimbledon looked to bring us a fresh new face in young jockey Javiar Santiago, who has been doing very well his first year at Santa Anita.

Also of interest was St Averil, a modest closer under another hot young jockey, Tyler Baze...you know of the Baze racing family ? Patriarch Russell(The greatest rider of all time in Northern California), Gary, Michael(seen recently in NJ over the Summer), etc. Tyler has high ambitions and talent to match so St Averil looked like a possible spoiler in the $750,000 SA Derby.

Hitting high speed surfaces in Southern California is no fluke as the climate and dry surfaces tend to produce fast times and powerful front runners. However, when we saw the first quarter come up in 22: and change we knew that was TOO Fast, even for So.Cal. Coming into a more reasonable :47+ for the half of this 1 1/8 mile race, track announcer Trevor Denman said that Wimbledon and his jockey were not content with the pace.....WHAT ? When Wimbledon went after the pack which was starting to bunch all I could think was that he did not realize how fast they were going and he moved way...way too soon.

Turning for home the two last placed horses Castledale and Imperialism were starting to catch the fire breathers into the stretch. Castledale went outside, and Imperialism went inside. With clear sailing and a complete momentum advantage, Castledale was a decisive winner, BUT he was also the longest shot on the board at 30-1. Imperialism who was muscling up on the backstretch and far turn had to negotiate traffic and a slight jarring incident which prevented him from showing his late power stride. Thus is the fate of closers...you cannot take a bad step or get stuck in traffic, its the difference between winning and losing.

We give kudos to Castledale, and his very nice win. However, we would be wrong not to point out to our fans that Wimbledon's race in the SA Derby did not showcase his true ability and we are not giving up on him just yet. Also Imperialsim may prove to be a late threat in the KY Derby if he can get clear running room..well thats not likely unless he's 15 wide turning for home or he can play cat and mouse weaving through the dense pack turning for home.

Final time of 1:49.20(fast), but left a lot to be desired as front runners set up an unrealistic pace scenario early.

The Payoff's

4 Castledale-Valdivia, Jr. 62.00 17.00 5.60
1 Imperialism-Espinoza 5.80 3.80
6 Rock Hard Ten-Romero Flores 4.00

*NEWS UPDATES FOR KENTUCKY DERBY AND FUTURE STAKES COMING THIS WEEK*

*THE STICK IS BACK FOR HIS FANS ! YES !*

02/04/04 *MC BACK TO REPORT ON THE COAST*
*JULIE KRONE ARTICLE GET WELL SOON*

Hi Everyone, this story is from MC, I am finally back up and around although I am forced to sit and am still a little dizzy.

During my accident, Jockey Julie Krone was injured in a bad fall, and I want to send her and her connections my best wishes for a speedy recovery. Of all the people in racnig today, Julie Krone represents the best possible news for the sport. She is not just a successful lady rider, she is quite probably one of, if not the greatest female athelete in the last century.

Julie has won so many more races then her lady peers and is on the peak of what looks to be a Hall of Fame career. It would have been likely that Julie would have had some Breeders Cup mounts for Lone Star's B.Cup this year. Now, we have to let her heal and just get back to normal riding, if she even chooses to do so.

For our part Julie, we hope you will return to racing, as you have after past accidents. You thrill the fans, and have a real connection with your horses. Like Surfers in So.Cal speak of a sort of zen with the earth and the waves they ride in the ocean, you have a zen with the horses. To think you would go out to So.Cal and just rock and roll so well against a proven group of veterans showcases your abilities.

For those of you who do not know, Julie Krone was the leading rider on the East Coast at tracks like Monmouth and the Meadowlands. She was in the top 10 jockey's at meetings like Belmont Park and Gulfstream Park. Julie was a good friend of a fallen champion, Chris Antly, and she is simply pound for pound one of the greatest of all time. Think of her as a female Julio Ceasar Chavez(pound for pound on of the greatest boxers of all time) for jockey's.

Julie went out to the West Coast in the past year, 2 years, and started winning in multiple batches EVERY DAY she rode. Up until her most recent accident, Julie looked to be on her way to a jockey title on the West Coast.

Get Well soon Julie, the sport needs you ! and our pick six wagers need you too ! Plus we hope your ok and back on top soon. Best Regards - MC

11/15/03 *CHAMPAGNE JOE WRAPS UP OAK TREE*

To our fans, we are back from a short vacation following Breeders Cup.

The Following is from Champagne Joe,

Oak Tree 2003 Wrapup

The 2003 OakTree meeting results are in the books, & the books are full of new records, some success stories along with some disappointments. Small fields were prevelant due to the ongoing shortage of quality horses in So Calif., & low attendance plagued this OakTree meet despite several track giveaways (t-shirts, tote bags etc), several mutuel voucher giveaways, & garanteed million dollar pk 6 pools. Breders Cup Day saw just over 50,000 fans in attendance, still thousands below expectations, & Cal Cup Day, just 1 day before the final closing day, a mere 18,000 fans passed theu the turnstiles. Neither day could be considered resounding successes, attendance wise or in monies wagered. Richard Mandell saddled 4 winners of the 8 Breeders Cup races, a new BC record, & Julie Krone became the 1st female jockey to win a BC race (Halfbridled). On the downside on BC day were the absence of Azeri & Mineshaft, and the less than stellar performances of Sightseek, Funny Cide, & Medaglia D,Oro to name but a few of the more highly regarded BC entrants. For the regular meet Doug O Neill topped the trainer standings with 22 wins, a new OakTree record (expect him to continue his winning ways at Hollypark as his horses are in peak condition at this time). P. Val continued riding at his best ever (34 wins), but also continued to rack up more possible suspension days , being involved in several controversial riding infraction charges. Patrick sometimes rides with abandon, taking chances to win, & maybe sometimes he does try TOO hard to win in every race, but he laways gives 110%!. Tyler Baze (31 wins), Alex Solis (24), & Julie Krone (24) also had very successful OakTree meets. These 3 should be at the top of the riding standings during the upcoming Hollypk meet. (P.Val will likely have to take off quite a few days due to his accumulated suspension time). Young Ryan Fogelsonger proved he can ride with the best of them, he posted 14 wins. Now, heres a note RE: Breeders Cup racing. My research shows that if, from its inception 20 years ago, one would have wagered on every entry with double digit odds, in every BC race, the ROI would be in the plus hundreds of dollars. BC races are so full of great horses that any one of them going off at 10-1 or more could be considered an overlay of a favorite. Keep that in mind come next October. Now its on to Hollywood, the track of lakes & flowers. This year Holly will have just 2 Friday evening cards, Nov 14 & 21st. The meet runs to Dec 21st, & I'll see you there, Good Luck!

LETS NAIL THE BREEDERS CUP ! BEST REGARDS MC - "The Stick"

*PLEASE NOTE - CHAMPAGNE JOE'S SELECTIONS ARE NOT THE STICK OFFICIAL BREEDERS CUP SELECTIONS FROM OUR 2003 SPECIAL*

The Following is Champagne Joe's Private Picks for our Web Fans. We Thank and Appreciate Joe's Insights.

Champagnejoes' Breeders Cup Preview

Distaff. Azeri would beat this field easily...IF she was in top condition, however some concern has arisen in her recent refusal to run, balking before a scheduled workout, and trainer Laura DeSeroux has been seriously questioning whether she should have Azeri run at all in the BC distaff. She may enter Azeri on Wed., but she may scratch Azeri come Sat. A.M. if the mare does not appear to be 100%. In either event, whether Azeri runs or does not run, the play in here appears to be Sightseek. Sightseek has been training well and seems well placed in this. Azeri, if she goes, and Got Koko figure for a piece.

Jevenile Fillies. Just cant go against Halfbridled in this. Victory USA & Class Above just seem a class below.

Mile. Stick with Special Ring in here. (Just forget about that Oak Tree mile). Peace Rules should rule over the rest. Six Perfections is the import to watch with a longshot chance.

Sprint. Frankel-Bailey-5 graded stakes wins=Alderbaran. Together they should run down Shake You Down & Posse and win going away. Filly/Mare Turf. OK. I admit it! I have no clue in this. Could be one of the Europeans or it could be Tates Creek ot Heat Haze. All evenly matched for this 1 1/4 Turf run. Good Luck!

Juvenile. Rulers Court could run another record breaker. Pomeroy likes the front end but Rulers Court should take charge at the 1/2.

Turf. Seems like a 2 horse race here. Storming Home or Sulamani.

Classic. Another one where a case can be made for just about anyone in here. My advice? Purchase "The Stick" full BC card for all Stick Picks (which are not necessarily the same as those listed here) and for value plays that could win big for you. Meanwhile, I will be at Oak Tree Friday, Sat. (BC day) & Sunday.

Hope to see you there. Good Luck! Enjoy the Breeders Cup!

10/08/03 *MC REPORTS ON B.CUP PREPS*

Champagne will have a report for all of you I'm certain of it. However, I wanted to recap the West Coast prep races run this Sunday because of the Breeders Cup importance.

*ANCIENT TITLE*

Tyler Baze said "GO !", and off Avanzado went. This powerhouse 6 yr old literally flew through fractions of 21:54, 43:58, blowing out 6 Furlongs in 1:08:12....WOW ! You rarely see a sprinter who can power his way on the front end through such fast fractions and hold on. The field in this one really did not have any chance after the first furlong.

Captain Squire and Alex Solis was 2nd. Bluesthestandard and Mike Smith were 3rd. Favorite, Yankee Gentleman and Julie Krone finished 4th after mounting a rally outside horses.

*OAK TREE MILE(TURF)*

Favorite, Special Ring never really got into his bit and finished 4th for David Flores at odds on.

This race can be compared to the Kelso at Belmont, as it was also a Grade 2 and 1 Mile on the Turf.

Designed for Luck and P.Val came calling in the stretch for a nice score at odds of 7/2. Longshot, and tough veteran, Sarafan under Victor Espinoza finished a determined 2nd at 8-1. Huge Longshot, Century City, who has shown life on turf in the past finished 3rd at 30-1 for Jose Valdivia.

Remember not to compare times between the Kelso and Oak Tree Mile, as the surface at Belmont and Santa Anita regularly produce times for the best horses in the range of the finishing times of these two stakes races. Freeforinternet and Designed for Luck are much closer matched then the times of each mile might suggest. We take this into account when we produce our Speed Figures for each race.

*NORFOLK STAKES*

If you were really hardcore, and you wanted to see this race, you were like us scanning CNBC(OF ALL PLACES !) for the Live running at 8:31 PM EST. To our great surprise, the coverage was Excellent !

This race looked innocent enough on paper, but it got ugly early and turned into a huge runaway for the eventual winner, Ruler's Court. We say it got ugly because Ruler's Court had that look in his eyes on the far turn. Vicious, aggressive, kind of like how we refer to Sulamani.

From an open field 2 year olds, we found a MONSTER ! I mean a really BIG MONSTER ! Coming into the stretch, Ruler's Court had about 1 length in front of the others, but then...he really started to run big. 5 lengths, 10 lengths, 14 lengths in the charts is charity to the others in the race as this one could have won by 20 easily.

Ruler's Court gave a fantastic race in the Norfolk. Now, did he leave his "A" game in this race, or is it the start of something special ? Remember, that when any horse runs a huge effort, he always has the possiblity of a bounce in his next race. But as we like to point out, he can also improve and run even bigger if he is on an upward cycle. If Ruler's Court is on the up swing, he is the horse to beat and he gets home field advantage for the Breeders Cup in roughly 17 days. Final time for Rulers Court was 1:41:27 for 1 1/16 Mile.

Capitano and Jose Valdivia were 2nd at 11-1 odds. Perfect Moon and Victor Espinoza were third at 7-1.

Look for Champagne to report his views on the Breeders Cup soon, and we will have FULL Coverage in our Free Pages News and *Special Reports* in our *Stick Breeders Cup Special* which will feature the same format as Last Year's Review. It may be purchased 1 week prior to the Breeders Cup, and Everyone Ordering will receive a Log In Username and Password to access the Special. Lets Bring home some NICE WINNERS for you ! Best MC

10/01/03 *CHAMPAGNE JOE REPORTS IN FROM THE COAST*

Fairplex Ends/Oaktree Opens

Sun. Sept. 28th. For the 1st (and likely the only) time in So. Cal racing, the closing day of one meet & the opening day of another overlapped. The CHRB okayed the overlapping race day to allow the Oaktree Organization to present 4 major Breeders Cup Prep races to afford the elegible BC hopeful horses entered therein a 4 week interval following the races for a proper rest & workout period prior to BC day on Oct. 25th. The top finishers of these 4 races (Ladys Secret, Yellow Ribbon, Oak Leaf, Clement Hirsch) will likely go in their respective BC competitions.

Meanwhile the 2 week Fairplex meeting closed out with their own Fairplex Derby as their marquee event of the day. Julie Krone rode the winner (Summer In Excess). It was Julies 1st ride ever at Fairplex, so she finished up with a 1.000% win pct, going 1 for 1 at Fairplex. As expected, (see Del Mar Wrapup) Martin Pedroza led all riders with most wins at Fairplex, and Ryan Fogelsonger was 2nd in the jockey standings there. Both posted excellent ROI figures for the 2 week meet. Expect trainer Jeff Mullins, who recorded the best in the money pct. at Fairplex, to continue his successful So. Cal. run at Oaktree. Mullins has proven that his success at Turf Paradise was no fluke.

To be a successful horse trainer (not unlike becoming a successful handicapper) requires lots of time & hard work, and Mullins fits the bill nicely. There's no voo doo involved. He's just a strong hands-on trainer who arrives on the track early, and departs late, all the while monitoring the feed, vitamins, legal medications, and workout schedules of all his horses.

He earns his success honestly, and deserves every bit of it. In other news here; Patrick Valenzuela has appealed the latest 5 day suspension (and $500 penalty fine) stemming from a riding infraction and subsequent post race confrontation with another jockey back at Del Mar. P Val has already successfully had postponed several riding suspensions and could end up having to take off from riding for almost four weeks come December. Hopefully, Kent Desormeaux will return full time to the So. Cal circuit. He could pick up some of P Vals vacated mounts. Favs as of this date for Breeders Cup Day include in the Classic=Mineshaft (If he goes), Turf=Storming Home, & maybe Tates Creek, Distaff=Azeri (Forget that 2nd to Got Koko), 2 Yr Old Colts=Halfbridled/Hollywood Story.

Good Luck all, And I'll see you there.

9/27/03 *CANDY RIDE TO SIT OUT THE REST OF THIS YEAR*

Hi Stick Fans, I beat Champagne to the story. This is from MC.

The Sid and Jenny Craig owned Candy Ride, will probably sit out the rest of this year. In order for them to run in the B.Cup Classic, they have to supplement for $800,000 !!! Thats a huge amount of money for anyone, and we have seen numerous years when people put up the big money and their horse ran 5th or 8th. It would be too much of a risk, especially in this top field.

We have heard that Candy Ride would race next year and we were happy to hear that. It should be interesting to see this superstar develop, and its probably best for the horse to let him rest and bring him back fresh next year while sweeping through the stakes ranks.

9/27/03 *California Jockey's to ride on Rich Jockey Club Gold Cup day at Belmont Park*

Gary Stevens, Corey Nakatani, Jose Valdivia and David Flores will all be racing on Grade 1 Day at Belmont Saturday. What a nice day of racing we will have too. See NY Section for news on the four Grade One races.

9/25/03 *SANTA ANITA TO OPEN NEXT WEEK FOR B.CUP MEETING*

The Breeders Cup is almost here Stick Fans. Next week Santa Anita opens and we finally get racing back to normal in So.California.

We have nothing against Fairplex, but watching races where the horses outside of post 6 all go wide into every turn leaves a lot to be desired. I watched 2 races on the simulcast last week and horses on the outside look like they are bolting on the turn. Its hard to imagine why they don't make a larger track and run more to industry standard. Is it any wonder names like Nakatani, and Solis, and Krone, and Stevens never ride there ?

Finally, we will be back at Santa Anita for the Oak Tree meeting, and the Breeders Cup in roughly 4 weeks. We will have many more news updates from Champagne Joe, and The Stick, and we will also be updating the major prep races coming into the big day.

Ryan Fogelsonger, the hot apprentice from Maryland will be trying to make a name for himself, and all indications are that he has the ability to bring home a lot of winners. Lets see what this kid can do ! Best Luck and Regards to Ryan.

9/19/03 *CHAMPAGNE JOE WRAPS UP DEL MAR FOR US - THANKS JOE !*

Del Mar 2003 Wrapup

This meeting can be described in detail with one word..SUCCESS! Success says it all. Attendance & track handle up apprx 8% making Del Mar, once again, the most productive & profitable of all North Aerican racetrack venues. Success for Julie Krone riding in her first full meeting at Del Mar, she finished 2nd in the standings. Success once agin for Patrick Valenzuela, he took the riding jockey title. Success for Gary Stevens in his quick return from that awful injury, to ride competitively once again during the last weeks of the Del Mar meet. Success on Pacific Classic Day (see previous report) Highlighted by the awesome winning display by Candy Ride (Horse of the meet as far as I'm concerned). Success in presenting 2002 Horse Of The Year Azeri who demonstrated her superb winning form & showed why she must be favored in the upcoming BC Filly/Mare stk come October 25th. Success with the fantasticly exciting Match Race, "The Battle Of The Sexes", pitting Krone vs. Valenzuela on the final Sunday of the meet. And what a match race it was. If you haven't seen it, find a video immediately, & if you did get to see it, try seeing it again. It's worth it! Success for Ryan Fogelsonger who moved his tack from the East Coast to ride in California, & who went right out and won on his very first mount at Del Mar. And success for yours truly who, altho finishing up with a losing day, scored more winning days than losers, while catching 2 pick 6s along the way. So it was more than a bit saddening to see it all come to an end so very quickly, but nothing lasts forever & all good things seem to end sooner rather than later anyway! Now the top riders on the So. Cal circuit will go on a short hiatus, the top horses move to Santa Anita to await the Oak Tree meeting there, while most other jockeys & horses head on up to the small 5/8 mile oval Fairplex track to compete during the 2 week Los Angeles County Fair held at the Fairplex Park fairgrounds. There are some riders who know that track and do well there; Pedroza & Flores top that list. Ryan Fogelsonger plans to ride there as well, and he should do well since his jockey career was actually nurtured on the smaller tracks around Maryland before he moved up to the majors like Pimlico etc. Also keep an eye on young Mick Ruis at Fairplex. He's an ambitious hustling rider and should definitely be a force to reckon with real soon. Good Luck and I'll see you at Oaktree!

8/27/03 *CHAMPAGNE JOE REPORTS IN FROM THE COAST - CANDY RIDE !*

Candy Ride Takes Pacific Classic!

In what must be viewed as THE most powerful run (record breaking time=1:59.11) in the 11 year history of the 1 1/4 mile Grade 1 Pacific Classic, Candy Ride, the undefeated (now 6 for 6) Argentine bred 4 year old, sometimes referred to as a kind of mystery horse, showed what true champion horses always show, grit, determination, and power. That power was very evident to those of us who were up close near the finish of the 2003 Pacific Classic. Candy Ride, with Julie Krone up in place of the injured Gary Stevens, stayed just off the pace set by favored Megdalia D,Oro (23:40-46:82-110:95), then as these two front runners turned into the stretch, Julie shook the reins and Candy Ride responded with a burst, prompting Jerry Bailey, who was up on D'Oro to shout "You got it Julie! Now go get em!". Jerry said after the race he knew at that point that Candy Ride had won. Candy Ride passed Megdalia D'Oro and pulled away with relative ease to win by 3 1/2 going away, and from where we sat it appeared that Candy Ride could have run to downtown Del Mar and back with no problem! Sometimes you dont need a telescope to find a new star. Candy Ride is just that! The other two runners in the race were never a factor. Fleetstreet Dancer lost his rhythm & missed a few steps, and Milwaukee Brew poured out flat! Look out BC Classic hopefuls. If owners Sid & Jenny Craig decide to put up the $800,000 entry fee for Candy Ride to run there (Candy Ride has not been nominated for BC races so that supplemental fee is required) the others may be racing for the place and show spots!

Of Note: 2003 Pacific Classic attendance figure of 30,458 was 3rd largest behind the record 44,181 back when Cigar raced, and the 36,041 of last year. The win for Julie Krone was her 4th stakes victory at Del Mar. It was the 2nd stakes victory at this meet for trainer Ron McAnnally, but his 67th overall at Del Mar, McAnnally has recorded 404 total wins at this track over the years, most by any trainer. Inter-track/off-track attendance reached 17,729. Total Calif. attendance =48,187.

Horses That Impressed On Pacific Classic Day. CANDY RIDE of course. 2nd race. ODDS ON- sent off at odds-on in his debut finished 2nd, well clear of third place finisher. Next time!

8th race. COMMANDERS FLAG-went from last (9th) to 3rd beaten just over 1 length off the winner. 9th race. SOLAR ECHO-Closed strongly in the Del Mar Oaks, finished 2nd beaten a nk. This 3 year old filly still ran best and should have been unsaddled a winner.

Until next time, CU at the races!

8/23/03 *PAC CLASSIC THIS SUNDAY !*

The $1 Million Pac Classic, the Crown Jewel of the Del Mar Meeting will be run this Sunday.

This is a Handicap at 1 1/4 Miles with Grade 1 Status and is for 3 yr olds and up.

Jerry Bailey and Edgar Prado will be visiting for the day to ride Megdalia D'Oro and Milwaukee Brew. Each jockey knows their horses well and has ridden them very well before.

An interesting import into the small 5 horse field is Argentine Superstar, the Undefeated Candy Ride. Julie Krone will be up and she has been exceptionally hot at the meeting. The addition of this one may make for a very exciting stretch run.

Bobby Frankel appears to be holding all the aces in this years running, and while Fleetstreet Dancer is a nice horse, only Kudos and Candy Ride stand in the way of a Frankel sweep.

*Note - The Pac Classic(ONLY) will be available at *GOLD RUSH* Level to all Order Levels as it is a race of such high importance, just like the Travers, and we want our fans and customers to have a detailed Stick Selections analysis for the BIG Ones.

8/22/03 *ARLINGTON MILLION IN CHICAGO MARRED BY HORRIFIC SPILL OF GARY STEVENS AT FINISH*

Del Mar is still running top races and the BIG Pac Classic is coming, but all eyes were focused on Arlington this weekend, and California Riders and Horses dominated the racing in Chi town.

Everyone was watching on the simulcast and on ESPN, and the race was very impressive on paper. The 1 Million dollar Arlington Million was set at 1 1/4 miles on the turf, and it drew a very International field of horses and jockey's.

California Jockey's in attendance and riding : Gary Stevens on Storming Home. David Flores on Sulamani. Corey Nakatani on Perfect Soul. Mike Smith on The Tin Man. Jose Valdivia on Honor in War, and finally Kent Desormeaux on Olden Times(*YES THERE IS A AMERICAN HORSE STALLION OF THE SAME NAME).

Only Pat Day and Rene Douglas represented local and mid western interests. No Jerry Baily, Edgar Prado, Johnny V or any American Jocks. All others in the big field were European just in for the big day at Arlington.

Turning for home, there was a cavalry charge going on. Everyone was coming late and it made for an awesome stretch run. It looked like this was going to be another classic Million with a great finish. Well, we had some scary moments at the finish Stick Fans. For those of you who did not see the race, Gary Stevens on Storming Home was thrown, and it looked far worse then it turned out.

Storming Home was coming from way back and what a nice close he made. Gary was well clear in late stretch when for no apparent reason, Storming Home bolted outward to the outer rail and Gary was thrown. It was a very shocking sight and a heart stopper for sure. When they showed the replay's it looked as if Gary was kicked in the head, even though he was "only" stepped on in his shoulder. He sat up in terrible pain and everyone watching had to swallow hard as they looked at his grimace.

The inquiry sign went up, and eventually they disqualified Storming Home from 1st to 4th for interference as he bolted outward. The highly partisan crowd boo-ed very loudly and was visably shaken and upset by the fall and DQ of Storming Home. In fairness to all, Storming Home did come out just before the wire, even though he would have won this race no matter what. Its all in how you value the DQ regulations. Did horse "A" interfere with Horse "B" to the point of bothering "B" and causing him to alter course. OR, If Horse "A" is going to pull away and Win regardless of his brushing with "B" should he be left up ?

We all Thank G-d Gary Stevens survived and although injured, will recover and was listed as "Stable" in the hospital at most recent report. What a wild finish to a Big race ! Lets hope we don't see that happen any time soon or ever.

Sulamani, placed first paid $7.60 as the favorite. 2nd place was a dead heat between Paolini and Kaiteur who were both also moved up from the DQ. Final time was 2:02 2/5 for the 1 1/4 Mile on the Turf.

8/22/03 *BEVERLY D GOES TO FRANKEL TRAINED HEAT HAZE*

1 3/16 Mile on the Turf and a rare Grade 1 on Turf for Filly's and Mares makes the Beverly D an important race from a money and a division level status. We can only think of 2 races, the Flower Bowl at Belmont as the other Grade 1 for this division and the Breeders Cup for the girls on the turf.

Bobby Frankel sent out Heat Haze with Jose Valdivia(a Major Coup for Valdivia) as the favorite. 20-1 longshot, Bien Nicole looked to steal off in a shocker as she almost made every pole a winning one. Turning for home, Donnie Pettinger was riding with everything he had, and he almost made it in credit to him. However, Heat Haze got up with a truly wicked(Masterclass) style close for the victory. Masterclass set the Belmont 6F Turf record a few years ago for Frankel also.

Heat Haze paid $5.40 as the favorite. The exacta with Bien Nicole paid $107. Riskaverse and Pat Day finished 3rd. Final time was 1:55 4/5 for the 1 3/16 distance.

A Big wave of The Stick to Jose Valdivia Jr. for a great ride and is nice to win those big ones, huh ?

8/14/03 *"SEABISCUT THE GREATEST HORSE RACING FILM OF ALL TIME"-MC*

I have to tell you Stick Fans, it takes a lot to impress me or move my emotions, and Seabiscut the movie was so impressive and thought provoking, you really should take your family and people you love to see this film.

We must warn all of you who have not seen it, this movie will make you cry out loud. Not due to any destruction of Seabiscut. However the movie is overflowing with emotion and things that matter. Honor and dignity, and daring, and arrogance, and every aspect of what makes life worth living are in this film. It will move you, I promise you.

The movie is based on the Laura Hillenbrand book, and it was a true timepiece. The movie captures the 1930's depression era like you were watching a newsreel of it. You look at how people suffered and how large numbers of people were out of work, unable to feed themselves, and then you see the unification of the "Biscut" team and you say to yourself, if someone made this up in a fictional account, you would not believe it. However, this was true life, and it DID HAPPEN !

The Racetrack scene's are very well done. It is almost impossible to tell the time period of the sequences at Saratoga, Agua Caliente(Mexico), and Pimlico. In fact, Pimlico came to life, and looked fantastic. This movie made you feel like you were actually there.

My personal kudos to the actors in this film also, they moved my emotions and made me believe they were who they portrayed. Even the horses they selected were incredible. The "War Admiral" horse was the devil incarnate, with a dark black coat that looked like it was made out of velvet. Even War Admiral's owner, I forget the name of the actor, was so convincing as a "Daddy Warbucks" type, that his smug manner and his sheer arrogance was truly wonderful ! I do not approve of being arrogant, however this actor made you feel the confidence of War Admiral's connections. After all, they had won the Triple Crown, no one could defeat them or run with them, right ? Well, go see the movie and cheer with the audience. Literally everyone at the theater treated the race sequence like we were all at the track. People clapped and cheered and it was very moving.

Also, when you examine the true life stories of the owner, trainer, and jockey of Seabiscut, you have to be awestruck that such an odd ball group would ever assemble or meet up. In fact, we did some research on jockey "Red" Pollard for you Stick Fans, and we discovered some surprises.

This film proves that the human heart and soul are indomitable. There is nothing that can ever happen to you that can destroy you if you are brave enough and strong enough to overcome. Despite everything that happened to them, no one in the Seabiscut camp ever gave up. Not the humans, and not the horse. They were all abused and battered and they all had to overcome the harsh reality's that happen in life. What a triumph of the spirit. What a true joy and pleasure to see people who never gave up on themselves and who brought a devastated country a hero and a reason to celebrate.

"Adversity and bad luck are obstacles we all must face, better to be pounded in the ground and destroyed then to ever give up. NEVER GIVE UP ON YOURSELF. Chase your Dreams and fight for them until they become reality-MC"

8/14/03 *RED POLLARD A TRUE AMERICAN SUCCESS STORY*

Despite being born in Canada, Red Pollard lived the American Dream of success and fame. He started off with nothing, and lived a full life with love, and a family, and he will forever be linked with Seabiscut.

Did you know that Red Pollard was at the racetrack in Detroit for his fateful meeting with Seabiscut due to the fact that the car he was traveling in broke down, and all he and the trainer he was with had was less then 20 cents and a bottle of "bow-wow" wine ?

We do not want to give away anything from the movie, so we will not tell you what race it was, however we will say the greatest race of Seabiscut's career was without Red as the jockey due to an injury he suffered.

Red Pollard's true life story can be found on the net, but we wanted to let you know more about him in our review of the movie.

Red Pollard was from Edmonton Alberta Canada, and he probably rode his first winner at Vancouver Island Park.

Red was blind in one eye according to historical reports from being kicked in the head by a horse, NOT as the movie allegedly depicted it, as his being blinded by his boxing for money.

After his fame and fortune, Red was a valet to other jockey's, which must have been a thrill for many of them.

Red fell in love with a private nurse who helped him recover from a badly broken leg. They were married against the wishes of the lady's father, and they had a loving family.

After riding Seabiscut, Red suffered 2 very serious spills where he almost died. In one instance he was involved in a pile up of horses in the Santa Anita stretch, and on another occasion, he broke his back which promted his retirement.

While some might say Red never had much success outside of riding Seabiscut, this writer can only refrain, how many people can ever say they were on top of the world ? Even doing it only once in your life is more then most will ever have, and to overcome the odds and adversity that the jockey, owner and trainer had to in their lives was a victory in itself.

When Red Pollard died of what was described by his children as his body simply "giving out", it was such a shock to his wife that she passed away within two weeks time. You hear stories of people who truly loved each other passing within short time spans of each other.

In 1981 Red was elected into the Canadian Jockey's Hall of Fame. While Canada may want equal claim to Red Pollard, I would say he was every bit as much an American, and we should (if we have not already) recognize his accomplishment. No one will ever say Red was a Bill Shoemaker, but everyone would tell you he contributed to America at a time when people needed a hero. Also, Red Pollard and Seabiscut were recognized by people of his era as a hero, and we should honor that accomplishment. Post humus awards and races name after them is in order. SO SAYS THE STICK !

8/14/03 *GARY STEVENS DESERVES AN ACADEMY AWARD FOR WOOLF ROLE*

Was that Gary Stevens ? Was it really ? Or was it the ghost of George Wolff ?

Without a doubt, Gary Stevens gave one of the most impressive acting portrayal's I have ever seen. I do not say this as a Horse Racing fan, even though I am one. When Gary stepped out of that 1930's Duesenberg at Agua Caliente, he was so much class and style, I was blown away !

I had never know too much about George Wolff before this movie, but it appears he was a very successful and at the same time honorable man. His friendship with Red Pollard was from the heart and he stood by him, without trying to steal Biscut away from him.

Gary looked so polished and professional in his role that he looked like a TOP Hollywood Movie Star in this role. The way he walked into the jock's room and finished Toby's(Red Pollard) story of how he rode for the Sultan truly endeared Gary Stevens to his audience. Also, Gary played the role with a lot of warmth and emotion. Gary must have drawn off his own true life experiences, but more then that, Gary portrayed this role as if he could actually feel what he was doing was real. I got the strong impression from watching Gary's eyes that he was placing himself in that time and place.

I don't want to say you missed your calling, because Gary is a Young guy(like The Stick !), but if Gary can bring that kind of emotion and power to roles outside of being a jockey, he will be a major motion pictures star.

G-d Bless Gary, From me to you, I hope you are nominated for and that you win an Academy Award for your role, I thought you were George Wolff in the movie.

If Gary should ever read this article, I want him to know that he shares the same Birthday as Myself - MC.

8/05/03 *CHAMPAGNE JOE REPORTS IN FOR A QUICK UPDATE FROM THE COAST*

Quick Del Mar Update

12 days into the 2003 Del Mar meeting and all indications are thet this will be one of the most successful, if not THE most successful meets, in Del Mar history. Opening day drew over 40 thousand fans, the biggest opening day crowd ever, and second only to the pacific Classic Day back in '95 when Cigar went for his 16th consectutive win. (Beaten by Dare N Go).

Over 25 thousand turned out for the 1st Friday twilight card (July 25th), and Sat. Aug 2nd saw 30.516 on track fans at Del Mar with another 18,381 coming out to other calif. off track facilities (total 48,897). The wagering handle neared the 20 million dollar mark for that one day! Also on Aug. 2nd Kent desormeaux made his presence felt with a strong ride aboard Touch Of The Blues ($7.40) winning the Wickerr Hdcp. , covering the mile on the turf in a course record 1:32.22. That beat the time of Special Ring who had won the Wickerr last year in 1:32.72. Later on that same day Julie Krone set a new stakes record time (1:33.62) in the $150,000 San Clemente aboard Katdogawn ($12.20). These record setting rides demonstrate how Steve Woods and his track crew have maintained & kept both the turf course and the main track course in tip top condition. The track surfaces have been fair with a slight bias for speed in the 3rd & 4th lanes on the main dirt track. Note of interest: On Friday Aug 1st, a Calif. record 1.5 million dollar Del Mar pick 6 payout went to a group of 5 players from Northern Calif. who had chipped in together to place a $128 ticket with 2 picks in each of the 6 pick 6 races. The pick 6 pool began with a 2 day carryover of over a half million dollars, and another $1.8 million was bet into it on Friday. That put the total pick 6 pool at $2.4 million for the Friday night card. The winners had the only ticket that correctly identified all 6 winners, plus 5 other combinations with 5 winners that paid out $12,719 each. So, the group total win was apprx. $1.6 million split 5 ways. So now who says you can't win BIG money at horse racing? See you at Del Mar!

7/16/03 *A GLEAM IS AN UPSET BY CEE's ELEGANCE*

In a race with Jerry Bailey on a Bobby Frankel favorite, and Gary Stevens on a Ron McNally trained 2nd choice, most would usually say thats a lock exacta. HOWEVER, no one told Victor Espinoza or Cee's Elegance they could not win.

Getting the jump on You and Affluent, Cee's Elegance was in full stride turning for home, and she impressed in a final time of 1:21 2/5.

The winner paid $21.40, ex. $54, and tri. $119.40

7/16/03 *$400K SWAPS GOES TO ANOTHER LONGSHOT, DURING IS HUGE !*

The longshot's continued on Hollywood Gold Cup Day with a major upset by a Bob Baffert trained horse ridden by Jerry Bailey !

I have seen some of the great races of our time, and I have to tell you Stick Fans, the 2003 Swaps was one for the Stick Home Video Library. We had 2 legitimate favorite's, and a lot of suspense and excitement through the running of this race.

The Belmont Stakes 2nd place finisher, Ten Most Wanted, had Pat Day in for the ride. Eye of the Tiger had Alex Solis and was the now horse. Coming out of the gate, During bulled his way to the lead under Jerry Bailey. Around the first turn into the backstretch, During was flaunting his early speed power. The rest of the field took its order and everyone was expecting During to fold at this distance.

Coming through the backstretch, Ten Most Wanted and Eye of the Tiger had enough and were en crouching upon the leader. Coming around the far turn, even Vic Staufer started to call Ten and Tiger as the horses for the stretch battle because During had dropped back to third and looked beaten. Under one of Jerry Bailey's greatest rides(I mean this for real), During dug in like a bull, and would not give up. At the 1/16 pole it was anyone's race. Put this part of the race in slow motion and blast some hard driving music, and you have an artistic creation. 3 heads bobbing on the lead, Ten, Tiger, a resurgent During. As we hit the wire, During courageously thrusts his head and then his neck in front of the 2 favorite's.

During paid $18.40 to win. Ex. $37.60, final time of 1:49 2/5 for 1 1/8 Miles. A Fantastic Race, and a horse to watch in the future.

7/16/03 *$750K HOLLYWOOD GOLD CUP ALL BAFFERT DAY*

Is he a Sprinter or a Miler ? Is he a Miler or a Grade One 1 1/4 Mile Horse ? He's the incredible Congaree, last seen in the Winner's Circle of the 7 Furlong Carter Handicap at Aqueduct !

Congaree ran his "A" game on Sunday for Jerry Bailey and Bob Baffert. Taking the lead going down the backstretch, Congaree said catch me if you can....and guess what ? They could not catch him.

Flying through fractions of 1:09 2/5 for the 6F mark, and 1:34 2/5 for the Mile, Congaree ran his heart out en route to a HUGE victory. *NOTE- STICK FANS, please notice who Congaree's father is. It is none other then Arazi, the losing KY Derby favorite of his generation who annihilated the B.Cup Juv when he was 2. I guess Arazi was much better then history gives him credit for, because of his famous loss in the Derby.

Harlan's Holiday was a much improved second, as the 3rd choice. Kudos came in third as the second choice.

Congaree paid $4.40 in a picture perfect ride for the win. Ex. $17, Tri. $34.40. Final time of 2:00 2/5 for the classic distance of 1 1/4 Mile.

7/08/03 *$750K ALL AMERICAN OAKS GOES TO DIMITROVA*

The $306 Triple in the All American was a Stick Spot Play, Fast Fran Sleeper, Blaze's Fire 1-2-3 for all the fans who had ordered Hollywood.

Ridden by David Flores, Dimitrova made a beautiful close to come hard on the outside and catch front running Sand Springs. Sand Springs under Mark Guidry looked to be well in hand turning for home and was a game second place finish at 8-1. Atlantic Queen, the OTHER Baffert horse in the race finished third at 6-1, being ridden by Top rider P.Val. The bettor's went for Baff's Santa Catarina and Gary Stevens. You will rarely see 6-1 on a Baff trained horse ridden by Pat Valenzuela.

Dmitrova paid $11.20 for the win. Sand Springs, who really ran a nice race, returned $8.40 for place. Atlantic Ocean, paid $6.40 to show. The Exacta was worth $46.40 for $1, and the Triple was worth $306.80 for the $1 price.

Final time of 1:59 4/5 for the girls at the 1 1/4 mile Turf distance. *-A Very Nice Time for the Ladies.

7/08/03 *JOEY FRANCO HUGE IN G1 SPRINT - TRIPLE BEND !*

It was an Invitation Only affair. It was Grade 1, and it was worth $300K. The Triple Bend, a long time So.Cal Sprint Heavy was filled with intrigue and suspense.

2nd Choice Joey Franco was pushed to his limit, but he ran HUGE ! Under P.Val, Joey Franco finished in a smashing time of 1:21 2/5 for the 7F distance. Catching the leaders turning for home, Joey had to negotiate the smashing and bumping going on between Bluesthestandard and favorite, Avanzado. Blues was eventually placed 6th behind Avanzado for interference in the race.

While getting around the two obstacles in front of him was not enough, a late charge came from 8-1 Publication who looked to storm the finish line in the final strides. Fourth place finisher Primerica was placed third to round out the triple.

Joey Franco paid $7 to win. Publication paid more to place at $7.40, and Primerica returned $5.60 for show. Exacta was worth $21.10 and Triple $96.40. Super with Kela fourth got back $796.40.

7/09/03 *CHAMPAGNE JOE REPORTS IN FROM THE COAST - HOLLYWOOD*

The following is from our West Coast Reporter, Champagne Joe. Thanks Joe !

Hollywood Park Notes

Holly Park 2003 spring meeting is winding down on a high note as track officials are celebrating one of their most successful meetings of recent years. The success of this spring meet is directly attributable to the many scheduled black type stakes, along with a good number of graded stakes, and combined with a veryactive promotional campaign (which included quality giveaways & several garanteed million dollar pick 6s).

The Friday evening racing cards were especially successful, while the graded stakes program lured top thoroughbreds from around the country, including locally based horse of the year Azeri, with a good possibility of Harlans Holiday to be shipped in for the meets big Hollywood Gold Cup weekend. Jockey Patrick valenzuela has enjoyed a very successful meet as well. P. Val sits atop the jockey standings leading all other jockeys by a wide margin. It was not unusual to see P. Val winning 3 or 4 a day on a regular basis. Just last weekend he scored with 5 winners off a card of 9 races.

It was also good to see Kent Desormeaux working his way back in to the So. Calif. jockey colony following his stint of riding in Japan. Kent must be looking forward to the Del Mar meeting (opening day July 23) as he always does well at that track. Speaking of Del Mar, the grounds crew has been working diligently getting that track in shape following the 3 week San Diego County fair which is held on the race track site, and reports are that both the main dirt track & the Jimmy Durante turf course will be in tip top condition come opening day. The barn area behind the backstretch at Del mar is also buzzing. Some horses have already arrived, & the grooms and stablehands are also already at work back there. All of us down here in the San Diego area are chomping at the bit in anticipation of the Del Mar meeting. Hope to see you there!

6/26/03 :
**Seabiscut RULES !*
The Stick reports on Azeri.
*AZERI QUEEN OF RACING*

The new Seabiscut movie will be out next month and we can't wait to see it ! The trailers looks awesome and the racing sequences look as if jockey Gary Stevens(George Woolf) had a camera in his hip pocket. The race scene's look first rate and very exciting. Don't miss a movie about a true American Legend. Seabiscut is a rags to riches story that shows you can overcome hardship and be successful. Follow your dreams and NEVER give up !

Champagne has been a little busy as of late, so we are going to report the news, as we often do, for California this week.

Champion older Mare, Azeri continues to impress the racing world. In the Grade 1, Vanity HDCP, Azeri was all business. She won with very light urging from Mike Smith and dew off easily after moving very effortlessly. We really have yet to see anyone push Azeri to her limit. That must be because she is in her own league. $2.60 was a giveaway gift on Azeri, who now looks to deserve .05 on the $1 the rest of her career.

Trainer Laura DeSeroux was having a big year last year, but Azeri still continues to be the star of her stable.

Its great to see, one of our favorite jockey's from back east, Mike Smith, get such a wonderful mare to ride. Mike looked like he was just exercising Azeri into the far turn. Sister girl blues, 2nd place, wanted to be brave on the lead, but she was no match when Azeri put her head down. Bare Neccessities, 3rd place, with Alex Solis up had the best late move, but it looked like they could run around the track again and she would not have caught Azeri.

With a handful of races waiting to be won by Azeri, wil she equal Cigar and Citations's stakes win mark ? She's proved she is a champion, will she prove she is a legend ? Right now, you have to ask yourself, who can run with Azeri ? She looks unstoppable, and unbeatable if she retains her form. while we see she loves California, nothin can be taken away from her overwhelming victory in the Breeders Cup at Arlington Park.

Azeri may be the next BIG thing in racing, and the sport needs and appreciates her very much.

Waiting for Champagne Joe's update. Will post ASAP

CHAMPAGNE JOE REPORTS IN FROM THE COAST
HOLLYWOOD UPDATE

The Following is from our good friend and west coast reporter, Champagne Joe.

"Hollywood Update Dateline May 24

On Sat. May 24 Azeri showed why she was voted 2002 Horse Of The Year with her performance in the Gr. 1 Milady BC Hdcp. She went to the front at the 1/2 mark and when Affluent came up to challenge for the lead Azeri just pulled away with relative ease to take her 2nd consecutive Milady Handicap winners trophy. She has now won 11 of her 12 starts! The question now remains if trainer Laura DeSeroux decides to pit Azeri against the boys in any upcoming events. From here it sure seems she could certainly compete favorably & on a high level against colts. At this point she has already beaten just about all of the leading fillies around, and so it may be time to step up and take on all comers in group racing during the rest of 2003. Track condition: Hollywood main track remains the most honest track of any in So. Calif.. Speed reigns & continues to reign. The main track has not varied much from day to day, & the speed bias on the inside lanes has remained intact from day 1, just as it was so prevalent last fall. The very consistent track condition at Hollywood makes it a bit less difficult to figure the pace scenario, and to come up with potential winner selections.

Desormeaux returns for a few days, back from Japan, this weekend, & Jose Santos (Winning Derby & Preakness rider) comes into town for a special appearance on Mon. Memeorial Day May 26.

Meanwhile the California Horse racing Board has announced an investigation into one particular race outcome (the 2nd on Wed May 21) where Flyindownbaylaurel was victorious. (Trained by Jeff Mullins). They have questioned the win by Flyindownbaylaurel at 7-2 odds, following a prior race where he was sent off at 40-1 against a lesser caliber of horses. Mullins claimed him out of that 40-1 race, & Mullins is now 7 for 7 with claimed horses running on the turf. Mullins seems to be doing something very right, or very wrong. CHRB promises a full public disclosure of its' findings. Could be another "something in Santos hand" fiasco. Stay tuned! "

CHAMPAGNE JOE REPORTS IN FROM THE COAST
HOLLYWOOD HAPPENINGS

The Following story is from our West Coast Reporter Champagne Joe, Thanks Joe !

"Hollywood Happenings 15 days into the spring/summer 65 day meeting & already certain obvious trends have emerged.

1. Favorites have been winning at a much below average 28%, & thats even with 4 of 9 favs winning on Sun May 11th! And come from behind closers have been virtually nonexistent.

2. Speed is the King! The bias seems to be towards speed horses & front runners. Most winners have come from the 1st tier of runners, 1st thru 3rd positions, & a high pct. of those have been at least 3rd entering the stretch. IE: On Sat May 10, Hollywood offered a 10 race card, with full fields (8 runners or more) in all save 2(which had 7 runners each). In every instance except for the 1st race the eventual winner was positioned in at least the #3 slot at the head of the stretch, including 2 wirw to wire winners. In the one exception, the 1st race, the eventual winner was 4th, but was still only 3 lengths behind the leader at that point.

3. With the retirement of Eddie D, Chris McCarron, & Laffit Pincay Jr, & because of injuries to Julie Krone & others, along with the departure of Kent desormeaux, who moved his tack east, the So. Calif. jockey colony has opened up for some new young riders, & has opened new opportunities for those veteran jockeys whose riding abilities were oftimes shadowed by those jockey greats. Victor Espinoza has been awarded many more mounts & has responded well, & young Tyler Baze has also notched some wins due to some open mounts as well. Look for Almeida, Valdivia, Martinez, & reliable Nakatani to join P. Val, Solis, Flores, & Pedroza more often in the winners circles, thus making the winningest jockey title for this Hollywood meet another real horserace. As of Sat 5/10 Espinoza leads with 17 wins from 87 starts. P. Val is 10 for 75 & Alex Solis is 10 for 43. In the trainer category Doug O'Neill leads all trainers at Hollypk with 10 wins. John Sadler & Paul Aquirre have 5 apiece. 3 others are tied with 4 wins each, Mullins is 4 for 5, Drysdale is 4 for 12, & McAnnally is 4 for 13. Jeff Mullins has been picking his spots carefully (his only non winning entry ran 2nd), as has Craig Dollase who has sent forth just 4 runners & has won with 3 of the 4. Meanwhile Bob Baffert has thus far been an unlucky participant in the trainer dept., posting 8 seconds & 5 thirds, but just 3 winns to this point. Baffert is just 3 for 31! No one should expect that dry streak to continue much longer. RE: That unsubstantiated story RE: Jose Santos & the Derby, as they say back where I come from "FORGETABOTIT"! It's a phony story! I'll C U at the races! Good Luck all!"

An Additional last minute News page will be sent out with last minute updates and information we think you will need to Win !

Jeff Mullins sure has a nice horse in the Derby this year. Buddy Gil has won the Grade 3 Baldwin, the Grade 2 San Felipe, and the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby this year, and he may just be getting started ! With one of our favorite All Time jockey''s in Gary Stevens up, Buddy Gil looks like a very live longshot at 8-1 morning line. Of all the jockey's you might want in a Grade 1, Gary Stevens ranks in the top 5. He knows how to handle the traffic, he has a plan, and he will save enough of his horse to make a late charge.

Bob Baffert has won more Derby's in the last 6 years then any other trainer in this field. Baff won 3 times ! Silver Charm, Real Quiet, and War Emblem. Oh, and that 2nd place finish in '96 that we don't talk about for Cavonnier.

So who does Baff have this year ? His name is Indian Express, and he is a UTAH bred ! Also, he raced his early career in .... tah-dah, Panama ! Ok, how many taboo's does Baff want to break this year ? With that said, Buddy Gil was pushed to his absolute limit through the stretch to hold off Indian Express in the SA Derby, and that is a race that gives him a lot of respect. However, will Tyler Baze be able to rate him in traffic and find a spot to sit in, or is he committed to pushing up front with the leaders ? Despite Baff saying he Tyler will follow Gary Stevens on Buddy Gil, they may be separated by about 10 lengths and 12 other horses on the backstretch.

Did you notice all the California horses in the Derby this year ? Atswhatimtalkingabout is Ron Ellis and David Flores. Domestic Dispute has Alex Solis up for Pat Gallagher. I remember when coming in from California was a negative in the 70's. Now its not only in vogue, but there are a lot of hopefuls and they all have a shot ! While Buddy Gil looks to be the best of the west, don't discount the others, we sure won't !

*PLEASE NOTE - ALL NEWS IN OUR OPEN NEWS SECTION DOES NOT REPRESENT OUR SELECTIONS FOR THE KENTUCKY DERBY, AND IS JUST FOR THE ENJOYMENT OF OUR LARGE INTERNET FOLLOWING.

BUDDY GIL THE KING OF THE WEST
CHAMPAGE JOE REPORTS IN FROM THE COAST

Buddy Gil looked very dominant and strong in the Santa Anita Derby. While holding off longshot, Indian Charlie, Buddy Gill seemed to have the stretch run measured right down to the inch ! Kudos to Indian Charlie and Bob Baffert for a very strong performance at long odds. Tyler Baze helped out and this combination may prove to be lethal if they should get a clear run and an open rail.

Gary Stevens was in the saddle for Buddy Gil, and we welcome back one of our favorite riders to the ranks from which he belongs. Gary was on again, off again from retirement in the past few years due to a severe knee problem. Riding through the pain, Gary has been showing us the heart of a champion and we wish him all the success in the world. Go Gary Go !

The Following report is from our West Coast correspondent and Good Friend, Champagne Joe.

"Was up at Santa Anita Sat for the big race. Collected! Also got a T-shirt! Happenings At Santa Anita. Dateline April 6th. Chris McCarron, hired on as operations manager at Santa Anita, saw his 1st full week in that capacity end up with the largest crowd of the meeting, over 33,000, coming out to watch the highly touted Atswhatimtalkinabout falter badly, running out of the money, in the 2003 Santa Anita Derby! The Santa Anita Derby (1 1/8 mile, $750,000 purse), viewed as the West coasts premiere Kentucky Derby prep race, was won by Buddy Gil ($14.60), an often overlooked and under rated 3 yr old colt, ridden by Gary Stevens (Garys record 9th Santa Anita winning ride). Why this 3 yr old did not go favored in the Santa Anita Derby remains a mystery to me! He had already beaten many of his S. A. Derby rivals before, including the over hyped Atswhatimtalkinabout. This win should now put Buddy Gil near the top of the list of Kentucky Derby hopefuls, almost on a par with Empire Maker. I say almost because the pace & final time (1.49.36) of the 2003 S.A. Derby was not really outstanding in any sense of the word, and Buddy Gil seemed to me to be just barely hanging on to the lead over the fast closing longshot Indian Express. It was a very profitable win moneywise for Stevens, trainer Jeff Mullins & the owners (Desperado Stables, & Merril Stables) albeit not truly very impressive. Buddy Gil has won a few big ones now, but he has not yet won in as impressive a manner as the recent wins of Empire Maker. Kafwain, another Kentucky Derby bound colt finished 3rd in the S.A. Derby, so with 4 weeks to go, the top contendors for the May 3 Classic appear to be 1. Empire Maker 2. Buddy Gil 3.Kafwain 4.Badge Of Silver. At least that's how it looks from here. Jockey/trainer roundup. P.Val leads all jockeys with 80 wins. David Flores has 63 & Alex Solis 62. Bob Baffert leads all trainers (Surprise! Surprise!) with 41 wins. Jeff Mullins is 2nd with 26 but actually sports the best win pct., & Vladimir Cerin has scored with 24 winners. We'll be at Hollywood in a few weeks. See you all there!"

$750K SA DERBY THIS SATURDAY
MIKE SMITH GETTING HOTTTTTT !

We will have the Entire Card and ALL the Winners for you on Santa Anita Derby day Stick Fans. Will Longshot Joe Special, Buddy Gil get the job done in the rich race ? Bob Baffert has Kafwain in for another try, and I am willing to "BET" that Kafwain will run a better race at his home track in California then he did at the Fair Grounds.

A Big Hello and Wave of The Stick to our Favorite "NY" Jockey, Mike Smith. Mike has been getting very hot recently and we think he is up to his old winning ways that we enjoyed so much at Belmont Park. Mike always used to say hello to us when he was in the big walking ring at Belmont Park. We were guessing he thought he knew us, and we always said hello back. However, we are BIG Mike Smith fans. Best Regards to a Top Rider.

3/13/03 :
P.VAL BACK ON TOP IN A BIG WAY
JULIE HURT, LAFFIT HURT, GET WELL SOON GUYS !

Patrick Valenzuela, better know to Stick Fans as "P.Val", has really turned his life around and is back on top again. We are very happy for Pat, and we were one of the few voices offering him support in our columns, while many others would have relegated him to oblivion. You have to give people a 2nd and even 3rd chance in Life. When other people give up on you, they are only showing personal insecurity, and anger with themselves. We are strong supporters of P.Val, simply look at our old articles below.

From 345 starts, P.Val has a huge 69 wins, and 70 second place finish's. That is 139 1st or 2nd from 345, or almost 48% in the top 2 every time he rides ! This is the Jerry Bailey of the West Coast. P.Val can be the same level and calibre of JD so long as keeps himself on the right course and free from distraction. You can do it Pat, keep up the Good Work !

We have big racing coming up at Santa Anita this weekend, but we are overwhelmed with the sudden and unexpected injuries of Julie Krone and Laffit Pincay.

Did you see the terrible gate spill of Julie Krone on the turf chute when watching your simulcast ? She got kicked by either her horse or another horse and from that she suffered 2 bones broken in her back. She is expected to be out for at least 2 months.

The All Time leading lady rider, Julie has told her fans she will be back as soon as she can be, and we salute her 'go get it' attitude. We were very happy to see her making a return as we watched her ride in NY and NJ before we moved to Florida. Julie made a stint at the Fair Grounds, and then decided to go to Santa Anita, where she has been riding a lot of Winners ! Julie had 33 winners at the time of her injury. In fact, the other day it was like a NY reunion with Jerry Bailey, and Edgar Prado riding in the SA HDCP and Mike Smith, another transplanted NY rider, racing at the same track on the same day.

The All Time Leading WINNER of races run in history, Laffit Pincay, was also seriously injured in a separate incident about a week earlier. Laffit suffered 2 dangerous fractures in his neck, and facial cuts. At this time it is not known if Laffit will return from to ride again or retire. Whatever his choice we salute this amazing man. We remember his Summer invasion of Belmont Park, where he totally dominated our jockey's which at that time included the great Angel Corder, jr, and Jorge Velasquez.

Best Regards and GET WELL Wishes to Julie Krone and Laffit Pincay from The Stick, and our Entire Staff, and our Very Large Fan and Customer base. GET WELL SOON GUYS !

"Big Day At Santa Anita!
One of the biggest crowds of the year to date (16,127, still a long way off the track record of 85,529 back on March 3rd, 1985) showed up at Santa Anita Saturday March 1st to watch the Great race Places' biggest race of the year to date (The Santa Anita Handicap) along with the biggest dollarwise assemblage of high stakes races of the meet thus far (the 1 million dollar Santa Anita Hdcp, $400,000 Kilroe Mile, $200,000 San Rafeal Stakes), as well as the biggest 1-day card of racing (11 races) to date. 3 East coast based jockeys came out to enter the competition, and as usual, the visiting East Coast riders exited with the bulk of the purse winnings in their saddlebags. (Fans of the Stick who had read previous California reports were clued in to such happenings). Pat Day, Jerry Bailey and Edgar Prado formed a powerful troika that scored 3 wins & 2 2nds from a total of only 7 mounts. Each rider scored 1 win, Day won the 5th (a $40,000 purse 61/2 furlong turf event aboard Big Future ($23.20), Bailey took the 7th (the $200,000 San Rafeal Gr 2) on Rojo Toro ($6.20), while Prado picked the plum winning the 1 million dollar Santa Anita Hdcp. Gr. 1, with Milwaukee Brew ($9.60) besting odds-on favorite Congaree. Brew had won this same race last year as well). Jerry Bailey was up on Congaree. Pat day had already also placed in the $400,000 Frank Kilroe mile aboard Good Journey. In that race Redatorre (Alex Solis replaces Laffit Pincay who fell in the Kilroe, but it ok) proved that he is back for sure and will surely be a very formidable foe at this level throughout the year.

Leaderboard at this point; In the jockey category, P. Val (31 wins) went winless this Saturday but still leads the pack. Pincay, Flores, & Solis each have scored 26 wins. In the trainer category, no surprises here either, Bob Baffert leads all trainers with 15 wins thus far, Frankel and the hot Jeff Mullins are tied 2nd with 10 apiece. Some horses that recently ran well and should be watched for include Throwin Heat, ran 2nd in the 2nd 3/1 & seems ready to break maiden very soon. Golden Bonus (11th race 3/1) also placed in 1st start following claim. Watch for him to run big in same type low level claimer within a few weeks. Pickled Bay (ran Fri. 2/28 3rd race) Led all the way to the stretch in a mile event. Looks like an easy winner when shortened up. So long for now. Good luck at the races!"

THE TIN MAN BREAKS MIKE'S SLUMP !
WE GIVE OUT LONG TERM WISH IN BOO LA BOO
STARRER DEFEATS YOU IN A BIG ONE

In the San Louis Obispo, a Grade 2 for $200,000 at 1 1/2 Mile on the turf turned into a runaway romp for the favorite. The Tin Man with one of our favorite jockey's, Mike Smith, really flew home after setting controlled, well rated Mike Smith fractions. You could see Mike smiling on the simulcast and we give a Big Wave of the Stick to him for a convincing victory. Way to go Mike ! Special Matter was 2nd and Harrisand was 3rd in a time of 2:31 1/5.

If you saw the races live or on the simulcast, you had to be jumping out of your seat as out Longshot Joe Special that we agreed to place as our Top Selection for the Boo la Boo literally(and we mean literally) FLEW like he had rocket engine's on his back to nail a win from DEAD LAST. The race looked hopeless fans, we broke dead last and it was only a 6 furlong race. In fact, jockey Alex Solis had tucked in from last and looked very content to be 5-10 lengths off the Last Horse !!! I have seen that before, and I told myself this horse is going to come home strongly. It did not look as though he had any chance at the top of the stretch, as he was still next to last and at least 15 lengths from the lead. As they came through the stretch, the scorching fast early fraction of 21:2 made everyone leg weary in the final furlongs. NOT Long Term Wish ! Long Term Wish, a Ceasar Dominguez trained, and Solis ridden horse moved so fast, the camera could only pick up a blur on the outside. Only when they slowed down the video could you see that YES, Long Term Wish got up for the win and returned $30.40 to Stick Fans who played him using our sheets. My Kai with Julie Krone was 2nd and Market Garden and Matt Garica came in 3rd in a time of 1:11 2/5.

In the Santa Maria, a Grade 1 for $200,000 4 yr old Fillies and Mares at 1 1/16 mile, we had a battle of champions.

It was billed as You vs. Starrer, and it lived up to the hype. You really having trouble stretching out her speed, was once able to run longer then she could. Everyone thought the 1 1/16 Mile would be perfect for her, and it almost was. Starrer had the unenviable task of trying to down horse of the year, Azeri and was thought to be a champion beyond racing with that one.

As they turned into the stretch, Longshot, Se me Acabo who lead most of the way was stopping under Gary Stevens. You, along with Rhianna were both making moves on the lead and Starrer was sweeping to the lead. Through the stretch it was all Starrer and P.Val to a convincing victory. Starrer paid $4.20 in a final time of 1:42 3/5.

The following report from Santa Anita is from our good friend and West Coast co-respondent, Champagne Joe.

"Santa Anita Mid-Jan. Report
Attendance/Track Condition/Jockeys

Attendance; It's just about 1/4 into the Santa Anita winter/spring meeting, & early on track attendance figures are not encouraging at all. On some days the box seats & grandstand appear virtually deserted. Attendance of less than 5,000 is commonplace, & on some days dips to less than 4,000. The no show fans are certainly missing something. Off track wagering is OK but there's nothing like experiencing the races in person. On one of those low attendance days ( Thurs. Jan 16, on track attendance 3,979) a new track record was set on the 6 1/2 Furlong turf course by Cayoke, a rather undistinquished 6 yr old horse with no real exemplary breeding credentials, sired by Always Fair out of the mare Sarah Annita. Cayoke was trained by Julio canani & was ridden by David Flores. They beat Kachamandi (2nd) by a head, & Ecstatic, the 2-1 fav, (3rd) by 1 1/2. Cayoke covered the downhill course in a sizzling 1:11.45 & paid $9.20 to win. It was a thrilling finish with Cayoke & Flores surging in the stretch to just get up by a head. (Flores went on to win 4 from 7 mounts on that day, with 2 2nds). However, despite the declining on track attendancedaily handle remained at nrear 10 million. So, now, what's the reason for the precepitous drop in attendance? The answer is clear and obvious. There are now within the southern California triangle, ranging from L.A. to Palm Springs & down to San Diego, 4 state operated off track wagering facility sites, and 15 Indian Casinos, many of which also offer off track horserace wagering. This is the primary causitive factor for declining on track attendance. Horserace wagering remains a popular form of gaming, but here in So. Calif. the battle for the gaming dollar is in full swing, and on track attendance is suffering!

Track Condition; The track surfaces have been mostly fair, with the main dirt track slightly favoring speed, and the grass course showing no real bias. Note, however, when handicapping races on the turf, always take into account the placement of the inside rails/fence. Notice when rail is at 0, inside horses tend to tire in the stretch and those running in the 5th or 6th lanes come on strongly. When rails are at 15 ft. those on the rail hand tough in the stretch. This is because the turf along the natural rail is usually softer, the dirt beneath the grass having been extensively stomped on in earlier races. The outermost lanes not having nearly as much traffic present a firmer footing for horses running a bit wider.

Jockeys; As noted in Hollywood wrapup the jockeys to follow at Santa Anita are Flores-Pincay-P. Val. Recently Julie Krone has been signed onto an ever increasing number of mounts & she has been scoring on some nice priced winners. Her ROI is among the highest. Add her & Victor Espinoza as two more jockeys to never count out.
Good Luck."

Hollywood Wrapup & A Look Forward to Santa Anita

"Hollywood Parks' Autumn/Winter meeting finished with disappointing numbers. All figs were down from last year. Kafwain & Toccet delivered some exciting moments when they finished 1-2/2-1 in the Futurity (including a win via DQ for Toccet). That race may well have been a preview of the 2003 Kentucky Derby. Santa Anita opens Dec 26 with their great opening day Calendar Giveaway. Here's what to look forward to at the Great race Place.

Trainers: Look for Bill Spawr to rack up a number of wins early on in the meet.Bill maintains his So. Cal. stable at Santa Anita year round (except for 8 weeks at Del Mar). His horses train on this track. He ships his horses crosstown to race at Hollywood. That gives him a sort of home field advantage here. Expect Bob Baffert to rebound and Doug O'Neill to remain hot. Doug took the training title at the just concluded Hollywood meet with 16 wins, his first training title in So. Cal. Jockeys: Jockeys to watch include Pincay, he always does well at Santa Anita, Flores and P. Val.

Pincay was 3rd in the jockey standings at Hollywood, Solis & Espinoza were tied with 34 wins apiece, Laffit had 30. Also watch for Mike Smith to increase number of mounts and number of wins. Mike should be up again riding Toccet, the potential favorite, in the 2003 Kentucky Derby as well. Horses: With so many European imports now racing in the US, many fans have requested the formula for equating timeform figures with our own speed figures. In order to figure the approximate speed number the basic formula is this. If the European timeform number is 105 and up=subtract 13. If the timeform number is 96-104=subtract 12. Timeform 86 to 95=subtract 11. Timeform less than 86=subtract 10. This will give you the approximate speed figure in US numbers. This should help in your personal handicapping. Good Luck at the races & Happy New Year to all!"

CHAMPAGNE JOE REPORTS IN FROM THE COAST
CHAMPAGNE JOE BOOKS FOR SALE CLOSEOUT

Before we get to Champagne's report we wanted to let all our fans know we had a wonderful Superfecta score on Saturday at Hollywood Park with a $8,342 payoff for a $1 wager and we spent $120 on a Key with the $13.60 winner on top. We emailed the info along with info about our free selections to our opt-in email list. If you want more Stick news and information, join our opt-in list by emailing us today with "JOIN" in the subject line.

The following report is from our West Coast Reporter and Friend, Champagne Joe.

" Tues Dec. 3. It's just about the 1/2 way mark thru this fall meeting at Hollywood, and althouugh the crowds have been a bit anemic the racing has been healthy & very competitive. Last weekends' Turf Festival included some of the best horses in the country. Fields were not thin but not overcrowded either, and offered many very good wagering opportunities. On Sat. Pat Day flew in from the East coast to pick up a nice win aboard Good Journey. (It seems whenever he makes a trip to So. Calif. he returns home with some nice purse money in the bank. Keep in mind he doesnt come out west just for the weather.). Meanwhile, the Ole Pirate Laffit Pincay has been racking up the wins & leads the jockey colony here with 25 wins from 103 mounts (50 in the money finishes). Laffit has been riding like the Pincay of yesteryear, and because of that has been getting a good share of some very good mounts. He is set to ride Wild Tickle on Sunday in the Corona Hdcp. Success breeds success! Pincay hold a substantial lead over 2nd place Victor Espinoza who has scored 19 wins from 104 mounts (57 in the money). Rounding out the top 5 jockeys at this point are Mike Smith with 17 wins from 80 (38 in money), Alex Solis with 16 wins from 95 (50 in money), & David Flores with 13 wins from 71 starts (32 in money). Check the "Hot Jock Lock" method in my little book "Systems, Simple & Sophisticated" to see how these numbers can work in your favor everyday. Espinoza leads in money earned with just under $985,000

Altho Kent Desormeaux has only 6 wins from 65 starts (26 in money finishes), he is 6th in money earned with just under $450,000. In the trainer category Doug O Neill leads with 8, with Baffert, Frankel & Leonard Duncan scoring with 6. The trainer standings are close with Sadler, Mitchell, Hendricks & James Cassidy marking 5 wins apiece. Frankel has most purse money earned with just over $470,00 & he leads all trainers across the USA with over 17 million in purse money so far. Best win pct among trainers belongs to Duncan with 6 wins from just 13 starts. Best in the money pct. at this point is held by Dan hendricks with 9 in the money finishes from 11 starts. Here's proof that horseracing has definitely become an international sport. Texas Glitter, winner of the Hollywood Turf Exp. Hdcp. has been flown to Hong Kong where he is scheduled to go in the Hong Kong Sprint on Dec. 15th. Also going to Hong Kong will be Falcon Flight, 3rd in the BC Turf. He's entered in the Hong Kong Vase on that same day. If the trip doesnt take too much out of them, both loom as potentially easy winners in their respective competitions. That's it for this report. I'll be back when Santa Anita opens Dec. 26. Good Luck to all & Happy Holidays."

CHAMPAGNE JOE WRAPS UP OAK TREE, THANKS JOE !

Oak Tree Roundup The short Oak Tree at Santa Anita meet began with high hopes for a successful meet, but concluded on a down note with some rather disappointing figures. Attendance was down, as was total handle. Laffit Pincay captured the riding title with 27 wins, while Patrick Valenzuela (who was arguably the best rider at the meet) ran 2nd with 26, & David Flores 3rd with 25. P. Val was DQ'd off two other winners via what many still feel were very questionable infraction calls. His "Return On Investment" (ROI) figures were highest amongst all top riders with two of his winners paying over 30-1, and many others paying double digits to his backers. P. Val is now sitting out some time serving a 15 day suspension but he will return to action at Hollywood Park before the end of November, and rest assured, he will be back in the winners circle soon after. He says he is in top condition and is chomping at the bit to get back in the saddle. In the trainer category, Jack Carava was red hot from day one, and finished well ahead of all other trainers to take the top trainer spot. Neil Drysdale, Paul Aquirre, J K Dolan, and Bob Hess all had somewhat disappointing meets this year. The actual high point of the Oak Tree meet was the public announcement of Breeders Cup Day 2003 being awarded to Oak Tree racing. That should revive attendance & handle figures for next years meet.

In other news, Kent Desormeaux will be the "roastee" at the Orleans, Las vegas, on Tues Nov 12 in what is being billed at the 1st Jockey Roast Dinner, a fundraiser for the Shoemaker Foundation. This fun banquet may well be the forerunner of a series of banquets similar to the old Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts. A dias of jockeys, trainers, turf writers, etc. are each scheduled to say a few light hearted words about the guest of honor. Dinner tix are available to the public at large for $45. Call the Orleans Casino/Hotel. Should be fun! Meanwhile Champagne Joe wishes all a very Happy Thanksgiving! See you at Hollywood!

MIKE SMITH RULES AND WE GIVE HIM A HUGE WAVE GO MIKE GO !
JULIE KRONE WILL BE SEEN THIS WEEKEND AT SANTA ANITA
PAT VAL WAS AWESOME AT B.CUP

We told Shane Sellers in our FL news that if he wrote in and wanted to say hello to our fans, we would post anything he sent us. The same goes for our CA jockeys, who we appreciate and support very much !

Mike Smith was a 2 time B.Cup Winner this past Saturday. Vindication, $10.60 and we picked him on TOP in the Juvenile ! Mike also won on Azeri, the favorite in the Distaff who went wire to wire. Mike always said hello to us in the walking ring area at Belmont, and although we did not know him to our knowledge, we said hello back. Its great to see Mike back a Big Winner this B.Cup. GO MIKE GO !

The News about Julie Krone is that she will be back in the saddle and out of retirement to ride at Santa Anita this weekend. Julie is very well known back east, when she was the leading jockey in the nation from her winners on the NYRA and New Jersey circuits. Julie is also the only lady rider to win a Belmont stakes, which she did with Colonial Affair. We also welcome her back to the races and wish her well. Julie knows how to win guys, don't leave her out of your plays.

There was another California jockey who rode this Breeders Cup and although he did not win, he rode his horses to their fullest and was in the money. Falcon Flight did not win the B.Cup Turf, but he sure came closing in a big way through the stretch for a 3rd place finish as the rank outsider in the field. P.Val we salute your return to racing, and know next year you will win a B.Cup race ! So says The Stick ! Excelsior !

STICK NAILS OAK TREE MILE FOR ORDERS AND FANS
SANTA ANITA NOW OPEN, YAY !
KALLOKAN QUEEN SHOCKS THE ANCIENT TITLE
STAKES ACTION FROM THE COAST

At the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains stands the finest track west of the Mississippi River, Santa Anita. More Family playground then Gamblers haven, Santa Anita is a theme park that offers Horse Racing. The mountains in the background, the well developed infield, and the finest horses on the West Coast, make Santa Anita(avec Oak Tree or sans Oak Tree) is a very nice venue for horse racing.

While Kalookan Queen was always a nice mare who would win her share of graded stakes against the girls, who knew she could sprint against the boys ? At a very nice price of 4 1/2 to 1, The Queen rocked home under Alex Solis for a HUGE win. Crafty TC and Pat Val were both seen with thier tongues hanging out of their mouths as they were passed by her. Pat Val, clean and Incredible, we stand 100% behind the P.Val and want to see him WIN some B.Cup races this year ! Go Pat Go ! Mellow Fellow and the Iron Man of Jockey's Laffit Pincay was 3rd. Favorite Swept Overboard and Corey Nakatani was 4th at odds on of 90 cents to the dollar. Final time of 1:08 .26 is by far the fastest B.Cup prep race we have seen, but just remember, So.Cal is known for fast times with a downward sloping stretch. Horses who run that fast in So.Cal, sometimes equal those times back East and sometimes they do not. Remember, in Arlington Park, the weather will be much colder then Santa Anita.

The Norfolk Stakes a G2 for $200K was won by favorite Kafwain and Victor Espinoza by a nose ! Bull Market and Mike E Smith were 2nd, and Listen Indy was 3rd under Alex Solis. Favorites 1-2-3 in order. Also of note, Bob Baffert, Double B trained the winner and 2nd place horses.

The Oak Tree Mile a G2 for $250K was won by longshot, Night Patrol at 9-1 with Jose Valdivia riding. P.Val brought 12-1 longshot Kachmamandi up for 2nd and 10-1 Nicobar was 3rd under Laffit. The Triple, a juicy $1,408.80. ALL STICK FANS WHO ORDERED SANTA ANITA THAT DAY HAD THE TRIPLE IN ORDER ! GO STICK GO !

The Yellow Ribbon Stakes, a $500K G1 race was won by Golden Apples and P.Val ! Voodoo Dancer and Gary Stevens was 2nd and Banks Hill, the defending B.Cup champion was 3rd at even money with Corey Nakatani. If you look at the race closely, Banks Hill ran a good race, she simply could not catch the horses in front of her who had a lot left after modest fractions. Banks Hill still very much in the hunt for a Back to back B.Cup victory.

Staff Logo Embroidered Shirts seen on West Coast
"BULL RING" NOW OPEN
Tyler Baze and Martin Pedroza 1 win apart
Trainer race a pick'em right now with most trainers 2-3 wins apart

Who were those people seen at Bay Meadows and Fairplex wearing Stick Staff Embroidered Logo shirts ? Was it really the staff, or was it just some lucky fans ? All Logo Shirts are available for delivery immediately, including our Special Racing Stripe Staff Shirts. Logo Tee's are available for FREE to all orders over $50 in one week.

Del Mar closed and Fair Plex opened for its very short meet at the California Fair. Know locally as the "Bull Ring", Fairplex has no turf course and very sharp turns on its small dirt course. Quite often, horses blow the sharp turns, so make sure your horse has the inside and the speed !

In the Jockey race, Tyler Baze and Martin Pedroza are neck and neck. 1 win separates them and Matt Garcia and "IGGY" Puglisi are not that far behind with 1/2 as many mounts. HUGE NOTE, Chance Rollins(Formerly a Arizona rider) would be in the lead if he could have converted most of those 13 2nd place finishes into victories. A lot of 2nds for Chance, more then any other jockey at the meet.

The trainers are very closely matched. Doug O'Neill has a 1 win margin over Wesley Ward(Yes, he was a rider in NY). Many trainers close behind with 2-3-4 wins, so this race is wide open.

Are you ready for Santa Anita ?

Pat Valenzuela returned to Hollywood Park and won the title ! Now he thinks he can just go to Arlington and win the Beverly D and just win at will ! GO PAT GO ! This is a Recovery Story of Mythic proportions ! WE LOVE P.VAL ! Pat is just what the So.Cal jockey colony needs right now after Chris McCarron's retirement. Don't leave off P.Val in your Exotics ladies and Gentleman, you will need him to Cash !

Saratoga is beautiful and has the very best racing in the World, BUT BUT BUT, Nowhere else in the World does the Surf meet the Turf ! You literally sit opposite the Pacific Ocean, its right across the highway ! The waves, the Sun, the breeze. Why do they only run 6 weeks ? They should run 6 Months at Del Mar ! Trevor Denman, The wonderful atmosphere, Del Mar is really on par with one of the finest racing experiences in the World. We HIGHLY Recommend going while they run. 3 Weeks left as of today.

Pacific Classic looks like its all War Emblem. He is so hard to go past, it makes for a low priced winner, but what a monster he looks like. The Derby and Preakness winner ate them up at the Spa, now he concludes a near Perfect year at Del Mar. Tape this one, it will be History.

*SANTA ANITA DERBY NOT AS FAST AS WOOD MEMORIAL !*
*CA.JOCKS ALL OVER COUNTRY FOR BIG MEETS*

Remember the good old days, when all you had to do was find a D.Wayne Lukas or Bob Baffert trained horse and feel confident that this was the next Kentucky Derby favorite ? Well times have changed.

One of our favorite, and very underated trainer's, Paco Gonzalez, is back in the spotlight. You may remember Paco from such horses as Free House, the runner up or 3rd place finisher in all three Triple Crown races of his generation.

Paco sent out Came Home and jockey Chris McCarron to a huge victory in the $750,000 Grade 1 SA Derby. For those fans who requested our help in the Futures Pools, YES, we did play Came Home in Pool 1 for some decent odds if he should win the Kentucky Derby. Easy Grades came in 2nd, and Lusty Latin finished 3rd. The Exacta paid $21.80, and the Triple paid $315.20.

What was important to notice was the final time of 1:50 1/5 for the 1 1/8 Mile distance. While it is a fast time, the Wood Memorial in NY went almost 2 seconds faster. You rarely see Southern California speed tracks running races slower then in NY, and especially at Aqueduct, the Winter palace.

Early hot horse, Dan the blue grass man, finished a disappointing last place after showing a strong win in Northen California.

I'm sure all our Southern California fans have noticed that many of their top jockey's have been racing all over the country this past weekend. Here is a brief synopsis of who's were and for how long.

Gary, Kent, Corey, and Eddie D are enjoying the racing in Blue Grass country at Keeneland. It looks as if Kent and Corey are there for the entire meet, which is a short one.

Laffit and Chris, Mike and P.Val have been spotted in NY and Kentucky, and at Oaklawn, but it looks as if they will return to Santa Anita for regular duty and only venture away for Big stakes races.

Alex, Martin, Tyler, Chance, and Victor are happy with all the Top mounts they can pick and choose from and have not ventured away.

Will anyone be enticed to come to Belmont Park for the Spring/Summer Meeting ? Corey, Chris, Gary, and Laffit have all come in to win the title in previous years. Lets see if anyone out West is willing to take on the "Amazing Edgar Prado". I warn you ahead of time guys, Johhny V was at the top of his game and still is, and Edgar still dominated Gulfstream. You might think Jerry Bailey is all you have to beat, but Jorge Chavez is here also. NY jockey's vs. CA at Belmont Park ? WE sure hope so !

*ALL WOZ.ORG FRIENDS ARE WELCOME AT THE STICK*
*CHAMPAGNE JOE REPORT-KENT D.INTERVIEW POSSIBLE SOON*
*THANKS AGAIN JOE !*

Everyone reading this article that came to us from Woz.Org are Very Welcome at The Stick, and we are happy to open up your hearts and minds to the beautiful world of Horse Racing. Also, ALL Stick Fans are encouraged to visit Woz.Org to enlighten themselves about the Internet and the World of Steve Wozniack, the father of modern computers, and co-founder of Apple Computer.

*The Following Article is from our Good Friend, and West Coast Reporter, Champagne Joe*

First off, let me congratulate those STICK readers who picked up on my jockey clues (Re: Desormeaux & Pincay) in my last report, composed Feb 28 & posted March 1st, and to those who began following the 2 named jockeys therein. Here's a rundown of winners recorded by the aforementioned riders in the subsequent days following that report.

Sat 3/2 Desormeaux 8 rides=3 winners (Decarchy $18.00, Milwaukee Brew $11.40, Highly Tempting $28.60). Pincay 6 rides=1 winner (Friendly Wager $ 20.20). Sun 3/3 Desormeaux 4 rides=1 winner (Warm April $8.00). Pincay 8 rides=3 winners (Yankee Pirate $8.40, Bingo Card $8.00, Tracemark $17.20).

2 day totals both jockeys=8 wins from 26 rides with $2 win payoffs totaling $119.80 ROI. Total profit on $2 win wagers $67.80 or 128%! Desormeaux kept up his winning ways during the following week posting 8 wins 6 seconds, & 5 thirds from 26 mounts in the 5 day period March 6-10 for an incredible 73% in the money pct., and an outstsnding 30% win pct. Coupled with the previously noted 2 day record of 4 wins from 12 mounts, Kents' 7 day win pct. stood at almost 32% for the first 7 days of racing in March!

Meanwhile, Hall of Fame trainer Bobby Frankel continued his streak as 2002's winningest stakes trainer. Frankel has once again saddled winners in some of the most prestigious and lucrative stakes races so far at the meeting, including wins in the $75,000 Some Sensation, $75,000 Blue Northern, $200,000 Malibu Stakes, $200,000 Las Virgenes, $250,000 San Felipe Stakes, $300,000 Frank Kilroe, $300,000 Santa Anita Oaks, and topped by the $1 million Santa Anita Handicap. *NOTE: The Frankel trained Milwaukee Brew was the only entry in the Santa Anita Hdcp. to have never raced in Calif. Brew was shipped in from Louisiana (See SA 1/2 way reports RE: shippers at SA).

Good news! It appears that Desormeaux & Bob Baffert have repaired the slight tear in their association and all things between the two have normalized. Kent is again riding many of Bobs' entries. Their rift was born mostly from a series of non-communication & misunderstanding. Similar to that short break a while back between Laffit Pincay & Bob Spawr, and those of us who follow jockey/trainer combinations in wagering are grateful for the mend in both cases. Pincay/Spawr & Desormeaux/Baffert are 2 very productive combos.

Speaking of mending, So. Cal racing fans, and especially yours truly, were so happy to see Joy Scott back in the irons following over 13 months of recovery and rehab after her awful spill back on Jan 19, 2001. On that day she was riding in an 870 yd. quarterhorse race when a horse in front of her mount fell, and her mount tripped and fell over that fallen horse. All told, 5 jockeys went down. Joy was the most seriously injured, broken tibia & fibula (large leg bones). 2 operations and many months of physical therrapy were needed before full recovery could be achieved. (Joy was leading rider at some Calif. fair circuits some years ago, and with over 300 lifetime wins, she's a proven competitor. I know Joy, and I know she's tough! Its good to see her back on the track! And thats where I'm heading, so I'll see you all there. Good Luck!

2/22/02 :
*POINT GIVEN HORSE OF THE YEAR !*
*TIZNOW OLDER CHAMP*
*Stick Pique Polo's are here !*

While we await our next installment from Champagne Joe, we thought we would let you know about the California horses getting the Eclipse awards.

Champion Point Given walked away with the 3 yr old and Horse of the Year Title's ! Gary Stevens had a great year with this one. 4 Grade 1's, including 4 $1 Million races. Baffert/Stevens, well, what else needs to be said ? Point Given won the Preakness, Belmont, Haskell and Travers, Well Done !

Tiznow is the older champ. This was a good choice also. Tiznow, mostly campaigned in California last year, but the former Horse of the Year did win the most Prestigious race, The B.Cup Classic for the 2nd year in a row. Our guess is that, he just did not win enough other races to get the nod over Point Given, who simply had a smashing season.

California Racing will also shift into KY.Derby fever mode in the coming months, look for some Top G1 Preps, including the finale, the SA Derby ! Follow us for all The Action and Updates.

The Stick Pique Polo shirts are being delivered Monday, and will be for Sale for $35. Email us for Details or to order one for yourself.

Santa Anita Happenings

It appears we may have a bright new star about to emerge on the So. Cal. racing scene. I'm talking about Elvis Trujillo. The young apprentice rider has been getting the most from his mounts and seems to improve with every ride. He's up early in the AM working horses for anyone who may request his services and though he hasnt yet latched on to any really big name stables (as it usually is with young riders), his book of mounts has steadily increased. Owners & trainers like his work ethics and dedication, & he appears to be a daring & courageous rider who has that strong competitive drive to win. Last Wednesday he maneuvered a 38-1 shot (Sea Rover) from 6th at the 1/2, 6 lengths back, to a fast closing 3rd, beaten just a length off the winner in a 5 1/2 Furlong event. On Sat Jan 26 Elvis had just 3 mounts, scoring a win in the 1st ($20.20 on Our Here Tiz), a 2nd (beaten a head) in the 4th aboard 16-1 Under Surveaillance, & then nailed the show spot in the 7th on Lady Cara, a 57-1 shot that paid $13.20 for 3rd, & helped push the tri in that race to $719.80, & the superfecta to $12,317.60! Keep an eye out for Elvis Trujillo!

Meanwhile, my friend Kent desormeaux has been heating up & not only on John K Dolan & James Cassidy mounts. Riding as he has lately, Desormeaux must again be considered a threat to take just about any race he rides, & for any trainer or stable, & at any odds. Kent hopes to turn the tables on Alex Solis at this SA meeting. (Solis was 1st at Holly, Kent was 2nd).

In case you didnt know, It was a Californian Herman Miller of Oakland, who won the NTRA handicapping contest finals in Las Vegas last week! Now here are some horses to watch for at SA. Theatre Script: Just beaten by a ns in Ca. debut. Dixie Thrill: Was a credible 4th in comeback try/next time out he should go on dirt & win easily. Sentimental Secret: Just missed at 5 1/2 F., ran out of track! Needs 6 or 6 1/2 F. for closing style. Good Luck & I'll see you at the races!

WHO CARES ABOUT WINTER IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA ?
P.Val is back and winning
JOCKEY/TRAINER STATS REVIEW

The East Coast may have a Southern migration in Winter months to warmer climes, but nobody in Southern California cares about Winter !

Santa Anita carries on as a Standard bearer for how racing is conducted in the USA. Other then the NYRA triumveret, Only Churchill Downs Inc. can be compared as a true Annual Racing Organization. The BIG 3 have the formula down for Year Long racing. All other tracks simply shut down after their season, and become simulcast outlets.

A short note to Welcome back P.Val to racing. We cannot say enough Good things about your riding, and we wish you success and triumph over adversity of the past. Go get them Pat ! Win Big -The Stick.

In the JOCKEY's Race, there is a 3 way tie among Top So-Cal Legends, Laffit Pincay, Kent Desormeaux, and under rated local Star Alex Solis. All have 18 Wins. Despite his Breeders Cup win, and our feeling that Alex Solis is one the best jockey's in the country, we almost never hear about him outside the So.Cal circuit. Of course, if you are a star on that circuit, you exude National quality.

Chris McCarron is 4th with 16 Wins from many less Starter's. Chris equal to the JD Class of riders, and if you leave him out on a Paco Gonzalez or Ron McAnally trained horse, you deserve to lose !

Victor Espinoza has 11 Wins, and after having a lot of spotlight from his title's last year, would love to move up back into the limelight.

Former NY Star rider, Mike Smith has 10 Wins. We can tell you for certain that Mike Smith has the ability to be #1 anywhere, just give him the mounts and watch him win ! Possible Mike has yet to break the barrier of all trainers who may not know him or consider him an East coast jockey.

Garrett Gomez also has 10 Wins, followed by "Jambalaya Cajun" Eddie D. and Jose Valdivia with 9 Wins each.

In the TRAINER's Race, Bill Spawr(Uses Laffit a lot) has a clear 5 win lead of 13 at the top.

Perenial leader Bob Baffert is in 2nd with 9 Wins, but 11 2nd and 11 3rd's. IF more of those 2-3 finish's had been Wins, Baff would be the leader.

The King of last years's Stakes action ANYWHERE in the USA was Bobby Frankel. Frankel has 8 Wins and is currently 3rd.

Ron McAnally is next with 7 Wins. A 3 way tie is next with 5 Wins for Darrell Vienna, John Sadler, and Jeff Mullins.

A Huge number of Trainers has 4 Wins each after including Bruce Headley and D.Wayne Lukas.

Santa Anita main track playing to closers on a regular basis. Middle Moving or stone cold closing seems to work well for those with a strong late run. Turf also favoring closer's. Hard to win on the front end in So.Cal unless you catch a lot of mud.

7/03/01 :
Del Mar opening soon !

We have all the old data files and stats for Del Mar, Saratoga and the Best Summer Racing in America ready and prepared for a Solid Del Mar and Spa meeting starting up shortly in the next 1 and 2 weeks.

Mary over at Del Mar has sent us 2 press releases, and to everyone's delight, there will be downtown valet parking for Del Mar this year !

Champagne Joe has informed us he will be reporting in from the Coast and we will post all his info for you when we get it ! We look to nail down Saratoga and Del Mar with the same high % winners we had last year. Email us for special Season Meeting rates at Del Mar and Saratoga, we know there are regulars of our site who go every day. We will discount the entire meeting for you. Email us for details.

KUDOS TO CBS FOR EXCELLENT COVERAGE OF THE RACES ON SUNDAY
Well, Bobby Frankel and the Hollywood Gold cup were in the News this week !

The best recent coverage of Horse Racing was seen on CBS last Sunday as the comments, people, and coverage of the races were Top Notch and World Class !

A Big Wave of The Stick from us in Salute to CBS, Dave Johnson, Randy Moss, Caton Bredar, Gary Sibelle, and the Arlington coverage(forgive us we did not catch your name), for the Best recent coverage of Horse Racing we have seen !

Like Randy Moss said on the CBS telecast of the races, How often have you seen a trainer Win two major races on a DQ within 15 minutes of each other ?

Senure in the United Nations at Monmouth Park was placed first for a $300K winners share to the Owners and the 10% share of that to Bobby Frankel.

Ok, its all over after that, right ? Wrong !

The Hollywood Gold Cup looked to be a 2 horse race between Captain Steve(Baff trained), and Aptitude(Frankel trained). We had Gary Stevens on the Captain, and we were more then ready to forgive him for his loss in the Stephan Foster.

Aptitude looked to have an entry mate to set up a hot pace for his late power closing move. Aptitude had Laffit Pincay up.

Well, no one told Chris McCarron he was not supposed to be able to win on Futural. Futural is a very nice locally based horse in the So.Cal black type ALLW ranks who has shown he can move up nicely in class !

As the horses came through the stretch, it was apparent that Captain Steve still needs more recovery time from Dubai. Lets pray we do not see the same thing happen to him that happened to Silver Charm after Dubai. The Dubai race is a once in a Lifetime win race, and is worth the trip and the pushing to win it, but it seems to take a lot out of our horses, and the last two Baff winners appear to be very tired after winning that race.

Well, needless to say, Futural brushed with NOT-Aptitide, but his entrymate, Garret Gomez ridden, Skimming. While it looked like Skimming was done for as Futural was passing/brushing with him, Aptitude came flying up for 2nd place. A long Stewards inquiry then occured after the race was run.

You can certainly feel for Chris McCarron and Craig Dollase for the purse money involved.

The Stewards DQ'd Futural and placed him behind Skimming, the 3rd place finisher.

This resulted in Trainer Bobby Frankel being placed 1-2 in the Hollywood Gold Cup, and resulted in a racing oddity as Frankel trained horses were placed 1st through disqualification in two Major Grade 1 Races on East and West Coast of the USA within a matter of 15 minutes. As they say in Brooklyn Bobby, "Go Figure !" Best Regards to a top trainer.

California based runner, Millenium Wind, is headed for the Blue Grass at Keeneland this Saturday. He is facing a tough field of 3 yr olds as AP Valentine, Dollar Bill, Hero's Tribute, and Song and a Prayer are all ready and waiting for him. In addition, 'Wind' has been recovering from a slight foot problem that has the experts wondering if he will be 100%. Well, we at The Stick have our figures, updates, and news flashes neatly filed in some large metal cabinets, and a lot of folders, but we also have our favorites. Dave Hofmans would not run a horse in any race unless that horse was 100%, and he was ready to win. There are always trip concerns and track surface considerations, but 'Wind' is the real deal and he should be respected. Point Given aside, this may be the California Ky.Derby horse this year...DUCK AGAIN ! Bob Baffert just threw his other shoe at the computer screen !

Well, all kidding aside to Bob Baffert, we think of you as the King of the Mountain among trainers, and we are just joking when we say you are throwing your shoe's at the screen when we say who is the best for this years KY.Derby. The Thoroughbred Corporation, Bob Baffert, and Point Given with Gary Stevens up have to be considered the ones to beat and should be heavily favored for this years Derby. If they get the right trip(and trip in the Derby is the single most important factor), Point Given could be a BIG winner at this years Run for the Roses.

After wondering if Corey Nakatani was leaving for good, or just a vacation from So.Cal, it looks as if this is just an extended vacation. When interviewed by the DRF, Corey said last week he thought he might be back for Del Mar. Well, you can't surf at Saratoga ! However, if you ride at Belmont, you can always enjoy the warm Summer rays at Jones Beach. For those who have never been to Jones Beach state park on NY's Long Island South Shore, once you get there, you would think you were in the Caribbean with all that White(rock free) Sand, and the waves of the Atlantic crashing on the shore. However, leave your surf board home, this is not Hawaii. But for 3 months every Summer, it can sure be a nice escape.

The San Juan Capistrano, named for the famous mission in California where the Swallows always return, will be run this Saturday. The race carries a respectable $400K purse and will be a marathon event at 1 3/4 miles, just a 1/4 mile short of 2 miles(Bring your running shoes !). The race is an invitational, and Baff has a potential star in Blueprint, a European distance specialist who has won at the distance. Bienamado is the morning line favorite and the highweight. Also expected in here are Subtle Power, Persian Lux, Tanassa, Mister Kick, and Indigo Myth. This race should prove to offer substantial value, and the exotics should offer some nice prices. We will have all the action for our Many customers this week and weekend. *PRESS HERE TO ORDER STICK SELECTIONS SHEETS*
